A group of activists rallying for change at a “death trap” of a junction in rural south Auckland has won a temporary set of traffic lights to manage hectic traffic flows on and off the motorway.
At the increasingly busy service station and retail zone on Mill Road, Bombay, drivers struggle to get in and out of Mill Road between the service station and the State Highway 1 on and off-ramps.
Fed-up locals established the Bombay Collision Cross Roads Action Group to demand change from Waka Kotahi and Auckland Transport.
That has resulted in a short-term design, which would include a traffic light at the SH1 southbound off-ramp at Bombay, the northbound off-ramp and on-ramp and the exit from the Bombay service centre, which would all be linked to each other, Waka Kotahi said.
Between 2014 and 2021, there were two fatal crashes and five serious crashes on Mill Road, according to road safety data from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport.
In a statement, a Waka Kotahi spokesperson said staff undertook traffic modelling before recommending that traffic lights were the most appropriate solution.

Local artist Jimmy James Kouratoras designed a mural to cover the town centre wall on Devon Lane with the brightest of colours to catch the eye and warm the heart, he said.
The mural is the first of what is hoped to be a town-wide project, led by Pukekohe High School art teacher Catherine Tamihere.
With funding from the Franklin Local Board, Tamihere was able to commission Kouratoras’ mural and get 20 year 10 students alongside him, brushes in hand.
“In the mural, there is reference to Tāne Mahuta, the first hei tiki. There are connections with te reo Māori and cuisenaire rods, there is whakapapa in there, there is Te Puia, there is Tawhia the male element, and the teachings of Te Wheke.”

Kim Sutton is preparing to bike, hike and raft 243 km from the West Coast to Christchurch in just six days, to raise $2000 for the organisation supporting people who suffer from gut cancers.
Sutton is an adventurer by nature - she has done nine of the 10 great walks and has the tenth one scheduled for December this year.
But since deciding to take on this challenge for the Gut Foundation, she’s been on a new journey, learning just how far the cancer spread throughout her family.
“My mum's dad passed away from bowel cancer when my mum was 20 years old so unfortunately didn't get to meet him,” she said.
“Through doing this fundraising and talking to family members I've found out more have been affected by it.
“It's made my connection to people who have suffered from the various gut cancers even stronger and more meaningful.”
Sutton has managed to raise $870 so far.
Gut cancers include oesophageal, stomach, liver, gallbladder, bile duct, pancreatic, and bowel cancers.
Collectively, gut cancers are the most common type of cancer in New Zealand, with more than 5,700 new cases diagnosed each year. Sadly, more than half of those diagnosed will not survive beyond 5 years.

Gael Coles and Shirley Roberts have been volunteering for Franklin Hospice for 25 years.
They have done a myriad of jobs over the years - sorting and serving in the second hand shop, assisting at events, organising Trees of Remembrance at the supermarkets to help run patient and caregiver support groups, and providing respite care to patients and families - and much more.
These days, Gael and Shirley are most often based at the Pukekohe Hospice shop on King Street in Pukekohe.

The next morning, on her way to her Saturday errands, she came off the road, skidded into a waterway and died.
Her partner, Michael Hicks, said he was usually a good fixer-upper. He could handle most problems, “but I can’t fix this”.
On the 6km stretch of road between Waiuku town and Waipipi there have been three fatal crashes and 16 serious crashes between 2017 and 2021, according to road safety data from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland Transport.
Most of Awhitu Rd has a 100kph speed limit. The section around the crash site has been temporarily reduced to a 50kph limit and a “slippery surface” sign has been installed slightly ahead of it too.

Spookers, which is on the grounds of Kingseat Hospital, a former psychiatric unit, has been leased by Julia Tukiri, her husband Jemall and her parents, mayor of Rangitikei Andrew Watson and Beth Watson since 2005.
The family originally decided to sell the business in 2018, but the sale fell through. It was put back on the market in 2020.
William and Adele Geradts, the owners of Armageddon Expo, a comic-con style event, said they planned to bring their “event experience” to the attraction, along with Jason Spiller, of gaming company Arcanist.
