The folks at Holthuizer Farm applied to the Fund for support to protect its waterways and enhance its biodiversity, with the specific intent of including children in the effort.
Farmer Dale Beker says the school's planting day was a huge success, with 40 kids planting 700 natives along a stretch of the Piako River.
In preparation Dale and her team moved the fence back 10m+ from the river, and engaged Restore Native Plant Nursery to drone map the area to estimate plant numbers and advise on weed control and species selection.
"We purchased over 200 plants from the Walton School nursery, which our PTA runs with the senior kids, and another 500 from Restore Native and the Waikato Ecological Restoration Trust," says Dale.
The Waikato Hauraki Conservation Fund is a ‘funding gap-filler’ that supports predator control and restoration planting projects across the region. It was kickstarted by a significant donation from Dianne and Selwyn June in 2021, who participate in its grantmaking decisions, and then boosted by a donation from the estate of the late John and Bunny Mortimer, who established the Taitua Arboretum.
Donations to the Waikato Hauraki Conservation Fund are most welcome, as they help grow the ongoing investment income it uses to support local conservation work by voluntary groups and landowners.

“The first door they knock on has to be the right door,” said Dr Kate Taylor, Trust Chair of the Midlands Sexual Assault Support Services (MSASS).
The MSASS trust set up its own philanthropic investment fund with Momentum Waikato in April 2023, founded with its own reserve funds and donations.
“The investment income from the Midlands Sexual Assault Support Service Fund at Momentum Waikato will go into sustaining and expanding our ability to help victim-survivors of sexual violence,” said Kate.

Together they manage an enhancement fund that supports efforts to environmentally compensate for the dams’ impact.
WCEET’s financial support has had a hugely positive impact on the Waikato and Lake Taupo catchments since it was established two decades ago – its funding of 300+ conservation projects has collectively enhanced 2600+ hectares of wetland and 2600+ hectares of riparian habitat, with 2.43 million natives planted and predator control applied to 7200+ hectares.
“We’ve supported some truly inspirational volunteer groups, landowners and businesses dedicated to protecting and enhancing the environment,” said Trust Chair Gwyn Verkerk.
“Without any promotion, our funding rounds are always over-subscribed. So we’ve set up the WCEET Fund with Momentum Waikato, as both a new investment income stream in its own right, and to provide an easy way for the public to donate towards the expansion and long-term sustainability of this crucial local conservation funding.”

We keenly support the WMRF through the ‘Waikato Medical Research Foundation Fund’, which its board set up with us just on a a year ago for the particular purpose of making it easier for the public to contribute towards the success of the region’s health research sector.

Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer (pictured below), its Scientific Director, started the VRF in 2022 with the support of a generous philanthropist.
In June 2023 they set up the Vision Research Foundation Fund at Momentum Waikato, to grow and diversify its income streams and provide a longer-term investment gateway for its current and potential donors.
Good vision and eye health are precious, as our eyes connect us to the world and are a window into our health. We will all be impacted by vision-related disorders at some stage of our lives, whether for ourselves or our family and friends, and we all face neurological and degenerative conditions as we age.
