So it has been with the closing of the doors at the Lyceum House in Cambridge – a venerable social institution has reached the end of its life, but has left a legacy that will keep on giving to its community forever.
Decades of fun, companionship and learning were enjoyed by hundreds of members at the House, with the ladies of the Lyceum being a formidable force for public good in Cambridge town and district.

In New Zealand … View moreWetlands are a precious part of our ecosystem, acting like the kidneys of the earth, cleaning the water that flows into them. They trap sediment and soils, filter out contaminants; can reduce flooding and protect coastal land from storm surge; and return nitrogen to the atmosphere. In New Zealand they support the greatest concentration of wildlife out of any other habitat and yet 90% of our wetlands have been cleared.
Many of the community conservation groups in the Hauraki Coromandel are working to protect remaining wetlands and the endangered species that inhabit them, such as the Matuku-Hūrepo or Australasian Bittern, pictured below.
This is a strikingly beautiful and secretive wetland bird that has perfected invisibility. Its colour and striations exactly mimic the close, vertical world of reeds and raupō, especially when it lifts its dagger beak right up, narrows itself to angular reed-thinness and sways gently with the wind-rustling stems. The male’s distinctive mating call is a sonorous, haunting boom that reverberates through its wetland habitat - the call of the wild.
It has been a delight for us to again coordinate the annual Christmas-time Workplace Giving by Craigs Investment Partners' Hamilton branch.

We've now passed on $13,100 in grants of various sizes from Craigs and its staff to the five Waikato community organisations they have chosen this year, namely Cambridge Lifeskills, Cambridge Tree Trust, Hamilton Land Search & Rescue, Paws 4 Life (who provided the photo below) and Waikato Women's Refuge - Te Whakaruruhau.
Quinton de Bruin, Investment Adviser at Craigs says: “We’re really proud of our Workplace Giving program here at Craigs.”
“Employees opt in to donate from their monthly pay cheque, building up funds over the year which we then donate to charities in need at Christmas time.
“Craigs also matches employee donations dollar for dollar, up to $500 per person per annum, so it’s a great way to be able to make a meaningful impact in our local community,” says Quinton.

This year the Boys Brigade Waikato Trust applied the income from its … View moreThe Boys Brigade Waikato Charitable Trust Fund is a great example of a community group having an endowment with Momentum Waikato to fund scholarships or grants that develop individuals' knowledge, abilities and capacity.
This year the Boys Brigade Waikato Trust applied the income from its Fund to providing grants that enabled three young men, Joel Chernishov, Jake Guyan and Dylan Young, to attend Stage 1 of Boys Brigade's National Leadership Development Course at Nelson Lakes in July.
Joel reported back that he "liked the way the course forces you to learn through practical challenges".
Jake (in yellow jacket in group shot below) said "All of the teaching sessions where insightful and eye opening in what they made me see in myself as a leader and the way I lead and work within a group".
Dylan said "I had such a great time and learned so many things and really went outside my comfort zone and had a blast. My favourite part was definitely the views. This was my first time in Nelson and I would never imagine how beautiful it truly was, so spending a couple nights with the beautiful sunsets and sunrises was incredible."

The Friends of Hamilton Gardens are the heart and soul, and the hands-on realisation, of the community's support for this incredible place. They play a pivotal role fostering awareness and engagement, activating spaces, and securing funding for ongoing developments.
Each year the Friends host a range of events in the Gardens, including Matariki celebrations, a Scarecrow Festival, the Mansfield Garden Party, a Medieval Fair, plant sales, guest lectures and social gatherings.
Their fundraising efforts have supported most of the current Gardens, plus now the upcoming Medieval, Baroque and Pasifika Gardens, and they've backed school education kits and the publication of Peter Sergel’s book The Time Traveller’s Guide to Hamilton Gardens.
