1 in 4 New Zealand adults will suffer from a mental disorder or distress at some point in their lives. When they do, let’s make sure they don’t have to go it alone. To create safer, more caring communities we need to not only look after ourselves but those around us as well.

For the month of September, we want to use our voice to raise awareness for mental health and well-being. Perhaps consider sharing a cuppa with someone you know who could use the support or challenge your family and friends to unplug from social media for the entire month to improve their well-being. If you or someone you know is going through a rough patch, don’t forget you can call or text 1737 anytime for FREE support from a trained counsellor.

This month also coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10th) followed by Mental Health Awareness Week (21 - 27 September).

However you choose to take part, make sure to tag us in your posts + use the following hashtag so we can see how you’re cultivating better mental health for yourself or in your community this month:

Hi neighbours,

Do you sometimes drive a few kms over the speed limit? Road police have scrapped their speed buffer on Kiwi roads in favour of a no tolerance approach.

All motorists edging over the limit at any time of the year can now expect to be pulled over and possibly fined, national road policing manager Acting Superintendent Gini Welch confirmed on Friday.

It brings an end to a long-standing convention that law enforcement would let minor speeding breaches slide.

“We don’t have a threshold,” Welch told Stuff, “we don’t have anything other than the speed limit.

Previously, besides zero tolerance long weekends, it was understood police could exercise discretion up to 10kmh over the speed limit.

The Advanced Smart Grid: Edge Power Driving Sustainability

by Andres Carvallo, John Cooper

Hardback, 262 pages

2nd edition, 2015

The authors look past the current climate of activity, much of it initially fueled with government grants, to a phase where business drivers alone dictate what gets deployed next.

Placing emphasis on practical "how-to" guidance, this cutting-edge resource provides you with a first-hand, insider’s perspective on the advent and evolution of smart grids in the 21st century (smart grid 1.0). You gain a thorough understanding of the building blocks that comprise basic smart grids, including power plant, transmission substation, distribution, and meter automation.

Moreover, this forward-looking volume explores the next step of this technology’s evolution. It provides a detailed explanation of how an advanced smart grid incorporates demand response with smart appliances and management mechanisms for distributed generation, energy storage, and electric vehicles. The Advanced Smart Grid uses the design and construction of the first citywide smart grid in the US as a case study, sharing the many successes and lessons learned.

You gain working knowledge of successful tools and best practices that are needed to overcome diverse technological and organisational challenges as you strive to build a next-generation advanced smart grid (smart grid 2.0). Additionally, this unique book offers a glimpse at the future with interconnected advanced smart grids and a redesigned energy ecosystem (smart grid 3.0).

Beer and Philosophy: The Unexamined Beer Isn't Worth Drinking
Steven D. Hales (Editor), Foreword by Michael C. Jackson

Paperback, 233 pages with index.

2007.

Excellent condition

A beer-lovers' book which playfully examines a myriad of philosophical concerns related to beer consumption.

Effectively demonstrates how real philosophical issues exist just below the surface of our everyday activities

Divided into four sections:

The Art of the Beer; The Ethics of Beer: Pleasures, Freedom, and Character; The Metaphysics and Epistemology of Beer; and Beer in the History of Philosophy

Uses the context of beer to expose George Berkeley’s views on fermented beverages as a medical cure; to inspect Immanuel Kant’s transcendental idealism through beer goggles, and to sort out Friedrich Nietzsche’s simultaneous praise and condemnation of intoxication

Written for beer-lovers who want to think while they drink
