Wellington Water advise their Incident Management Team are working across the region to ensure things are operating as effectively as possible to meet the challenges presented by the significant amount of rainfall experienced across all areas.
Status report is as follows:
• Widespread rain across the region resulting in surface flooding and stormwater overflows plus wastewater systems being overwhelmed
• The network has been overwhelmed and our crews are working to manage the pump stations and clear all intakes
• Major Waste Water overflow in Featherston: the team are utilising sucker trucks to over-pump in order to reduce pressure on the network.
They advise everyone to avoid beaches and rivers for at least 48 hours following this significant rain event.
Our thoughts are with all our residents who have been impacted and are facing a rough time at the moment. We all are trying our best to ensure things are sorted soon.
Some pics of Martinborough, and Ponatahi and Waihenga bridges to show the extent of the flooding. Send us your pics, if you've been affected by this weather, comms@swdc.govt.nz

I am sweet when it suits, I look adorable and my caregivers tell me I am, but if I have had enough fuss, or I see another cat, I have another side. I am looking for someone who can speak cat, who can read cat, and loves me for who I am. I hate other cats, and would probably make a dog's life unpleasant. I am looking for a home with older children, or just adults, who will love me for who I am. If you are still reading this, then please click apply now so my caregivers can find out more about you, and can make you an appointment to come and meet me."

- Emergency crews are very busy across the region responding to the most severe incidents. Roading inspectors have been out since daybreak covering the roading network as well as focusing on known trouble areas.
- Wastewater and stormwater overflows and surface flooding has been widespread. We are marking some of the worst areas for traffic management but won’t be able to get to everything. Members of the public should drive to conditions and exercise due care.
Some of the work already done:
- We have cleared culverts at Hinekura Road that were causing damage to the new road. Council crew will be back at the site today and are monitoring the area – which has received around 92mm of rain so far. Thanks to local resident Pip Wilkinson for her early warning which meant a quick response was possible.
- Waka Kotahi has closed the Waihenga Bridge and we are watching Ponatahi closely. Oporua spillway will close later today and may be closed for a couple of days. Rivers out of the Tararuas may have peaked, but a lot depends on how much further rain the region receives.
- Wellington Water Limited has received over 100 storm related incidents and is making a prioritised response.
- Wastewater overflows in Featherston are being cleared using sucker trucks.
Council staff and roading teams are active across the network addressing the most serious issues. If you have a weather related issue, please call 06 306 9611 to log it ASAP.
And stay off the roads as much as you can today please.
We understand many of you have need to travel for vaccinations and testing. Should you need to travel, then the road in and out of Martinborough is through Ponatahi to Longbush then to Masterton. Please drive to the conditions and exercise extreme care.
Latest update; the road is closed north of the Kokotau Bridge between Ponatahi and Carterton.
Weather update:
Stoney Creek and Te Awaiti have had over 130mm of rain in the last 24 hrs. The White Rock Road adjacent to the Tuturumuri school is underwater with water halfway up the fence.

Hinakura has had 95mm in 24 hours and Council contractors have cleared culverts at the site on the Hinakura hill yesterday.
Water is flowing across the Kahutara Road south of Kahutara and its expected that the Oporua spillway will be flowing across the road this afternoon, therefore closing that route out of Martinborough.
The Western Lake Road, just north of the East West Access Road intersection is flooded with surface water and again north of the Cross Creek intersection where a stream has burst through flood banks.
