The council is eyeing up a potential new landfill site is Smooth Hill, which lies between State Highway 1 near the city's airport and Taieri Mouth Rd. About a dozen affected properties – most newer semi-rural homes – were contacted on Wednesday, shortly before the council held a press conference about the issue.

Public Trust head of marketing and partnerships Josh Byers said if no owner or descendant of the properties came forward within two weeks, the notice would then be added to gazette.govt.nz.
