Student crime: Violence, vandalism, car thefts on the rise at some universities

Certain crimes – including violence and vandalism – appear to be rising at some New Zealand universities.

In 2013, 23 violent incidents were reported at the University of Otago. Five years later, there were 72 in a 12-month period.

In 2013, 23 violent incidents were reported at the University of Otago. Five years later, there were 72 in a 12-month period.

Willful damage incidents also increased during that period from 69 to 104. The university said the increase coincided with the installation of a new CCTV system.

Smaller hospital in works for Dunedin, but price tag remains the same

A leading architecture firm will design Dunedin's new hospital, which will be smaller than first thought, Health Minister Dr David Clark says.

Warren and Mahoney, which has its headquarters in Christchurch, was confirmed as the lead architects on the $1.4 billion rebuild.

A leading architecture firm will design Dunedin's new hospital, which will be smaller than first thought, Health Minister Dr David Clark says.

Warren and Mahoney, which has its headquarters in Christchurch, was confirmed as the lead architects on the $1.4 billion rebuild.

A final decision on the project will be made early next year. Clark signalled the new hospital would be bigger than the current one, but "smaller than was first thought".
