The Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed an appeal by government insurer Southern Response to stop two Cantabrians' legal action against them to considered be representative of 3000 other similar claimants.

Respondents Brendan and Colleen Ross said that Southern Response had left them $100,000 out of pocket and the Supreme Court made the landmark decision to uphold their case on an opt-out basis, which allowed the other claimants to be represented in legal proceedings.

The decision means that if the government pays out in one case, they must pay out to the 3000 others, lawyers estimate this to cost the taxpayer $5 million.

Are you still experiencing financial difficulty as a result of the earthquakes?

As the official surf season kicks off with volunteer lifeguards out patrolling beaches across the country, two local Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) clubs are vying to win a brand-new Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) worth $25,000 thanks to BP's Vote the Boat.

The New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club has been saving lives since 1910. It is a small club that has been struggling since the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, and is currently undertaking a huge renovation project on their clubhouse rebuild. The 48 volunteer surf lifeguards at New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club patrol and conduct rescues along 20km of beach and coastline. Last summer, they spent 2,118 hours patrolling the beach and 287 preventative actions were taken.

The North Beach Surf Life Saving Club was formed in 1916. The club has seen an increase in junior membership over the last three seasons, and now has a total of 141 members and 48 volunteer surf lifeguards. Having a new IRB in the water in addition to the patrol IRB would significantly increase safety. Last summer, North Beach Surf Life Saving Club spent 1,717 hours patrolling 4km of beach and coastline and 1,051 preventative actions were taken.

For two weeks until Sunday 22 November, New Zealanders are invited to vote daily to decide which of the club finalists is most deserving of the lifesaving equipment. One vote per person can be cast online per day.

With over 1,000 missions a year in our flying intensive care unit, we need your help to raise $175,000 for our sickest and most vulnerable patients.

The New Zealand Flying Doctors are only partly government-funded, and it is only with the kindness and generosity of the community that we can continue to deliver this life-saving service. With mission numbers increasing each year, the need is greater than ever before.

Today we are asking you to support missions for neonatal and paediatric patients - with over 70 missions a year for children under 15 years of age, we are focused on getting each and every one of them the right medical care.

Your contribution will help save the lives of New Zealand children!
