Happy Friday neighbours,

If you can’t handle the heat, get a new kitchen.

The Christchurch City Mission’s social enterprise, Thrive Catering, is relieved to have moved to a new state-of-the-art commercial kitchen as it continues to provide cooking classes and other essential lessons to Christchurch’s most vulnerable.

Thrive offers work experience courses for City Mission clients who are trying to get back on their feet. They are given valuable cooking lessons and other life skills to better their prospects for the future, when the mission no longer provides direct support for them.

The charity's Hereford St base kitchen had become too small, meaning course capacity was limited and many were missing out on learning vital skills.

Hi neighbours,

Severe flooding is now affecting Akaroa on Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula after more rain has fallen in the last two days than it has so far this year.

The worst of the flooding is around the recreation ground and people have been asked to avoid travelling through the area.

State Highway 75, the main road to Akaroa, is closed between Birdlings Flat and Barrys Bay, cutting off Little River, where the local school was evacuated on Monday. Akaroa residents are also being asked to conserve water.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa) is reporting that 188 millimetres of rain has fallen in Akaroa between 9am on Saturday and 9am on Monday.

Hi Canterbury,

What do you think about the opportunity to transfer this hillside to public ownership? Will you be donating?

500-hectares of Lyttelton hillside has been put up for auction and Stuff has teamed up with a charitable trust to get the high-country plot into public ownership.

The Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust launched its Te Ahu Pātiki project to purchase the spot between Mt Herbert and Mt Bradley after an offer from a local farmer.

$1.5 million is needed to set up the park and the trust has been crowd funding for the last $600,000 it needs.

With five weeks until the deadline sale, $120,000 still needs to be raised.

Multiple land crossings scattered across the private land have been accessible only through land-owner permission. Ron Donald Trust manager Suky Thompson says that public ownership would guarantee the Te Ara Pātaka tramping network, running from Akaroa to Lyttelton, would always be accessible.

"Those private land crossings are unsecured, which means that they rely on the goodwill of the current landowner. If that landowner was to have a change of attitude, or if the land was to be sold to a new owner who didn't want the public there, they could be closed."

Head over to Stuff's and The Press' Givealittle page and don't forget to type NFP if you don't want your comment used in the Northern Outlook.

Hi neighbours,

Location is the drawcard for a newly revamped Christchurch café.

Red Eight at Portstone is the newly renovated café inside the Portstone Garden Centre on Ferry Rd in Woolston, sporting a unique look and vibe compared to the city’s many other hospitality joints.

Its location inside Portstone Garden Centre allows copious sunlight to beam through the surrounding glass, reflecting off the freshly painted walls and decorated furniture. The feel is light and summery with bright colours and a feature wall as you walk in, just how owner Stephanie Reeves wanted it.
