A multimillion-dollar upgrade will go ahead for the compost plant causing the infamous Bromley stench.
The foul stench has plagued the Christchurch suburb for years and left some residents on the brink of selling up. Others claim the plant is responsible for exacerbating health issues.
About $21.5m will be spent to enclose and upgrade the Living Earth plant to limit the odour spreading into the public.

Would you be put off by a health warning at your local swimming spot?
Around 100 popular swimming locations across the country have been slapped with health warnings for the summer season this year.
Local councils reported long-term poor water quality due to the presence of algal blooms and high concentrations of sediment in popular swimming spots like Lake Rotorua, Waikanae Beach and Paraparaumu Beach. Some of these sites have had consistently low scoring that local councils have stopped monitoring them and have instead posted long-term warning signs against swimming.
Swimmers that ignore signs risk gastrointestinal illnesses and respiratory diseases from water made hazardous by farm runoff, sewage contamination and high bacteria counts.

Christchurch ratepayers have paid $2.55 million for a culturally significant Akaroa home – more than twice its rateable value.
The Red House, which has a rating valuation of $1.2m, is surrounded by the Takapūneke Reserve, an area of huge importance to Ngāi Tahu and classed as wāhi tapu (a sacred place) by Heritage New Zealand.
The privately-owned home and its surrounding 2864-square-metre garden was due to go to auction on Thursday, but the Christchurch City Council decided in a publicly excluded meeting last week to put in an offer. The auction has since been cancelled.
