The Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed an appeal by government insurer Southern Response to stop two Cantabrians' legal action against them to considered be representative of 3000 other similar claimants.
Respondents Brendan and Colleen Ross said that Southern Response had left them … View moreThe Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed an appeal by government insurer Southern Response to stop two Cantabrians' legal action against them to considered be representative of 3000 other similar claimants.
Respondents Brendan and Colleen Ross said that Southern Response had left them $100,000 out of pocket and the Supreme Court made the landmark decision to uphold their case on an opt-out basis, which allowed the other claimants to be represented in legal proceedings.
The decision means that if the government pays out in one case, they must pay out to the 3000 others, lawyers estimate this to cost the taxpayer $5 million.

Long-term walker – and volunteer – Vivien Price says the meet-ups offer an ideal opportunity to mix exercise, social connections and community knowledge.
Along with Pat Williams, 94, Dorothy Morris, and Philippa Goile, the active foursome have found friendship and fun along the way since first setting out in 2000.
Williams, who took part in the very first outing, remains a committed regular.
“We all enjoy up to 45-minute rambles, usually from February to early December,” Price said.
“Up to 40 people – aged from their 50s to 90s – often join the Fendalton walks. However, our numbers drop in winter.”
For Price, originally from England, the group is a “wonderful way to meet new people and form friendships”.
“It is always very friendly and inclusive, and we often enjoy a coffee together,” she said
Supported by the Christchurch City Council, the activity programme operates in six areas, including Beckenham, Fendalton, Halswell, Linwood, New Brighton and Papanui.

Heaps for the kids to do: bouncy castle, climbing tower, snag inflatable golf, face painting, stone carving, soft archery, Police radar gun to test your speed.New this year is the Bishopdale YMCA running gymnastics have a go and the Bishopdale/Harewood Scouts also running scouting activities for the kids.
