Hello
My name is Jenny Brown and i'm a PhD student at the university of Canterbury. I'm conducting research into the effects ongoing earthquake insurance claims have on mental wellbeing. I would greatly appreciate it if you could inform people of my study so they can take part if they are interested. Anyone can take part, including those who haven't had ongoing claims. It involves a 25 minute anonymous survey, once completed participants can leave their email and go into the draw to win one of eight $50 westfield vouchers.

The link for the survey is here canterbury.qualtrics.com.... It is an anonymous link that takes participants to the start of the survey. I welcome everyone to take the survey even if they do not have an ongoing insurance claim.

Coping strategies for earthquake-affected children

The way you parent has little effect on post-traumatic stress your children may be experiencing, research shows.

University of Canterbury researcher Dr Kathleen Liberty says parenting styles account for about 2 to 5 per cent of the variance in childhood post-traumatic stress disorder.

This knowledge should reassure parents who believe their children's trauma and anxiety arises from the stress the Canterbury earthquakes have placed on many families, and remind schools dealing with quake-affected children not to engage in "parent shaming", Liberty says.

In our own backyard, our youngest kids are going without the basics. Unlike schools, early childhood centres don’t have a nationwide support programme. Children under 5 are at the most crucial age for brain development.

But KidsCan is helping. Since October they've been delivering five fresh meals a week to 25 early childhood centres, and kitting out kids with new raincoats and shoes. They want to extend the programme, so no one misses out on learning.

KidsCan, Neighbourly and Stuff have partnered up to raise enough money to feed and clothe 1000 more children under five. To support a child, sign up at KidsCan.org.nz.

New Brighton Community Gardens is pleased to host The Rubbish Trip's popular presentation on zero waste living in New Brighton.

Join Hannah and Liam, the Two No-Waste Nomads behind The Rubbish Trip, for an introduction to the practicalities and philosophy of waste reduction. Drawing on their own research and over four years of experience living zero waste, Hannah and Liam will guide you through the whys and the hows of life without a rubbish bin, including:

- What is the zero waste movement? Why is waste reduction important?

- How zero waste principles can revolutionise your perspectives on living and lifestyle, beyond your rubbish bin.

- Innovative examples of waste minimisation policy, practice and thinking from around the globe, and how these might inform community-level waste reduction.

- Tips for how you can reduce the rubbish in your life (including fun DIY household products, cosmetics, and other life hacks).

This event is free; everyone is welcome. Free zero waste nibbles, tea and coffee will be provided. BYO reusable, non-disposable cup!

This talk is part of The Rubbish Trip's travelling project, taking the zero waste message around Aotearoa New Zealand. Follow them on Facebook for updates and upcoming events around the country!
