Humanely dealing with pests this winter.

Kylie Klein Nixon Reporter from Homed

I'd never want to cause one unnecessary pain or suffering, which is why we've chosen to manage pests in our home with traps. It's not ideal, but it's better - and safer - than poison. I've done a little research on humane, effective vermin control during the wet months, when they like to come in from the cold. Take a look:

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a travel story for Stuff about the things that have surprised returning Kiwis about New Zealand. If you have recently returned from overseas or know someone who has, it would be great to hear about the things that have stood out for you, for better or for worse. Whether it's to do with the weather, the cost of things, the public transport, the food, the housing, the people or something else entirely, we'd be keen to hear about it. Please remember that your comment may be included in the article, unless you say you don't want it to be. Thank you.

"My neighbour Ann, a retired special ed teacher, goes the extra mile for her community. On her neighbourhood walks she notices blocked drains, or dangerous pavements on school routes and spends time phoning the Council to get them fixed. She is part of a local group that petitioned for new school crossings on Takanini School Road. She volunteers at the local school for free maths tuition. She sets a really great example of looking out for her community and makes the world a better place."

This is the third year we have sponsored the Special Childrens Christmas Party here in Christchurch. Not only do we as a family business sponsor this, our daughter Laura who is a St John's Youth Cadet volunteers every year as a helper. We are especially proud that laura who speaks NZ sign is able to introduce herself in NZ Sign and communicate with not only the deaf children but many special needs children who communicate largely thru sign. It is one of those moments we as a business and family as a whole get to give back to the community.

Laura has also just started babysitting a child who's primary communication is sign language. She is so responsible at 17, she makes us super proud as parents. If you know anyone with children who sign and need a babysitter with great first aid please feel free to contact us thru our business page in the mean time the more work you put thru our business the more we can invest into the Special Childrens Christmas party next year

Your dog might be older (in human years) than you realise

Stacey Reporter from Stuff

Hi neighbours,

Think you know how old your dog is? Think again.

Multiplying by seven isn't accurate, a new study says. Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and other leading health institutions across the country have now debunked that common belief.

Christchurch has not managed to get its recycling correct for a single day in the past nine weeks, leaving hundreds of tonnes needlessly being sent to landfill.

Council rubbish collectors have had to dump contaminated residential yellow bin waste every day since May 4, when recycling facility EcoCentral reopened after the coronavirus lockdown.

In that time 635 truckloads of recycling have had to be thrown away โ€“ almost half of what has been collected, or about 3175 tonnes. The problem, caused by people throwing non-recyclable waste into their yellow bins, has cost ratepayers about $635,000. Read more here.
