The budget for the delayed Christchurch Town Hall project has blown out to more than $152 million – and the city council tried to cover up the latest increase.

Three years ago the Christchurch City Council told ratepayers they "did not expect" to pay more than the original $127.5m restoration cost. But councillors met in secret last week to discuss the latest $12m top-up, which takes the total budget to $152.2m, after it already ballooned to $140.6m.

A police spokeswoman said they were called to the suspicious blaze at the Caulfield Ave, Halswell home just after 12.30pm on Wednesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Gregg Cottam said police and fire crews found a person dead at the home. The cause of death was "unexplained" at this stage, he said.

Christchurch metro area commander David Stackhouse said two fire crews from Wigram and Spreydon attended the blaze.

He said the blaze was described as a "smouldering fire" and was extinguished not long after arrival.

The cause of the fire was unknown. Police and fire investigators would investigate, he said.

Suburban Christchurch residents say they'll be disadvantaged by a Northern Motorway traffic change that saves a few minutes' driving for North Canterbury commuters.

St Albans and Mairehau residents have joined local businesses in opposing proposed changes that would channell traffic to and from the $240 million motorway past their doors when it opens in 2020.

Locals, including Christchurch Central MP Duncan Webb, have made submissions and more than 100 others have launched a petition asking the Christchurch City Council to rethink how to link the motorway to the central city.

"Why are Christchurch residents having to be disadvantaged by traffic from North Canterbury being forced down our roads?," the petition asks.

"These are people from a different district that don't pay rates here, but the residents and business in St Albans, Mairehau and Edgeware are paying the costs socially and financially to accommodate these people so they can get to or from the city a few minutes faster."

I understand it is because of a cycle way, although I haven't seen that advertised. The time this project has taken and the manner that the construction has been engineered has to be seen to be believed. The extravagance , the hotch potch of expensive materials - the complexity - for what ? If it is for a cycle way, I don't know where the cyclists will be coming from or going to. That part of the city is very quiet with few cyclist or cars so this extravagance is completely unnecessary. Richardson Tce. has experienced several major flood events over the last year or so and the whole area will require to be be re-engineered to lessen that and the Tce. itself is a real mess since the quakes, so my bet is all this work will be dug up over the next short time frame so the whole area can be made safe and functional.

The contractors doing this work are shaking their heads in disbelief as to what is going on around our city - another mad example is Worcester Street. Of course they are loving this work as they are filling their coffers while the council are draining ours !
