MARCH 2020
*An unpublished study from China suggests that Covid-19 largely affects older people. Those over 80 had a death rate of 14.8%, compared with 8.0% for those ages 70 to 79; 3.6% for those ages 60 to 69; 1.3% for those ages 50 to 59; 0.4% for those ages 40 to 49, and 0.2% for those ages 10 to 39. No deaths have been reported among children from birth to age 9.

REMAINING SAFE.
• KNOW YOUR RISK. If you are a smoker, elderly, or suffer from chronic disease, especially cancer or poorly controlled diabetes, your immune system will be depleted and less able to fight infection. When the 2020 flu vaccination becomes available, I strongly recommend having the immunisation, to build an early protective antibody response before influenza hits this winter. That will be one less illness to deal with.
• WASHING HANDS. This is the main way to avoid personal contact with the virus from contaminated surfaces. Wash your hands thoroughly, exposing all skin surfaces to soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. Then dry your hands on a disposable paper towel, as wet skin aids the transmission of the virus. Remember to carry a small sanitiser bottle with you to disinfect your hands when washing is unavailable.
• WEARING FACE MASKS. It is more important that those with cough and cold symptoms wear masks as this protects others from being infected. However, if you enter a high-risk area (hospitals, clinics), wearing a mask
is protective, and men being clean shaven is an advantage.
• COUGHING AND SNEEZING. Use armpit, elbow or handkerchief to prevent release of infected droplets over others.
• KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. Don’t shake hands, hug, kiss, or hongi with anyone who has respiratory symptoms or is unwell.
• AVOID UNSAFE PLACES. If Covid-19 becomes pandemic, I strongly recommend that those at greater risk stay home and don’t allow anyone with cold symptoms to enter. I well remember reading the exploits of the courageous and tempestuous Dr Rawene Smith (real name - Dr George McCall Smith, superintendent of Rawene Hospital in Northland), who during the 1918 flu epidemic blocked cars entering the Hokianga and
preventing the entry of influenza.
• BE PREPARED AND PLAN AHEAD. Ask yourself what will you do if you become infected, or if your relatives, friends or flatmates are quarantined for 2 weeks. Read the **Civil Defence website which has practical advice to assist in developing an emergency survival plan – food, long term medication, toiletries, and toilet paper required for at least 2 weeks, and don’t forget the needs of your pets. Ensure there is a
neighbour, friend or family member who will check on you.

COVID-19 PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
~Excess sugar and alcohol are detrimental to your health.
~Negative emotions subtly weaken the immune system but mindfulness, prayer, and talking with friends and counsellors, as well as, writing therapy, strengthen our healing abilities.
~I am always concerned when I see diabetics with high Hba1c levels, who I know have a compromised immune system and an inability to fight infection. Please see our nursing team, who at no expense, will guide in ways to improve your diabetic control.
~Sound sleep is curative. Eat well and consider supplementation,
especially Vitamin D, Vitamin C, zinc and selenium.
MAINTAIN A STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM - see image attached
Intravenous Vitamin C (IVC)
In the April 2019 newsletter (available on-line) I told of the usefulness of IVC in emergency situations, though NZ hospitals are reluctant to use it. It has been reported that a number of studies are underway to examine the effectiveness of IVC in treating coronavirus patients.
***March 3 -The government of Shanghai, China has announced its official
recommendation that COVID-19 should be treated with high amounts of
intravenous vitamin C. (1) Dosage recommendations vary with severity
of illness, from 50 to 200 milligrams per kilogram body weight per day to
as much as 200 mg/kg/day.

Dear customers,
At Kmart, our priority is always serving our customers and the communities we operate in. We seek to provide a safe environment for our customers and our team members and in times such as these, we believe it is our role and responsibility to do our best to ensure we can provide access to the products people need, while doing everything we can to keep our customers and our team safe and healthy.
I wanted to share some of the things we're doing to ensure everyone who shops with us or works with us is safe, as well as do our bit to prevent the spread of Coronavirus COVID-19.
First we are following the advice of the Australian Government and World Health Organisation and their recommendations for minimising the spread of this virus.
Over the past few weeks we have taken a range of precautionary measures across our stores including:
Commencing increased cleaning and sanitisation of our stores.
Preparing our teams to respond quickly to any emerging situation should it occur to best ensure the health and safety of everyone involved.
Asking any team members displaying flu like symptoms to refrain from coming to work and introducing additional benefits for team members to ensure none of our team members are disadvantaged financially through this process.
Over the coming weeks we will continue to monitor the situation closely and act quickly on the advice of health authorities. This may mean you see things that look a little different in our stores as we take additional precautions. We appreciate your patience and your support as a customer.
I would also ask that if you are feeling unwell please take care of yourself and those around you. Should this be the case or if you prefer not to visit us in store we are always happy to welcome you online at www.kmart.co.nz...
If you have any questions or would like to know more about the steps we are taking to protect our customers and team, you can contact us on 0800 945 995 or www.kmart.co.nz.../contact-us
We look forward to serving you,

As a valued AA Member, I felt it timely as Chief Executive to write to assure you that we are taking all precautions necessary to protect our Members, customers and people against COVID-19.
Our businesses and services continue as usual and I want to assure you we are doing all we can to provide these services safely, guided by the Ministry of Health.
Whilst we always strive to provide a clean and safe environment, we have taken the following steps as extra precautions.
Increased cleaning and sanitisation in all our AA Centres, AA Auto Centres and AA Driving School vehicles, including regular cleaning of high contact surfaces.
Asked all our teams to wash and dry their hands often.
Asked our people to stay home if they are experiencing any illness or flu-like symptoms and introduced a discretionary sick leave policy.
If you are experiencing any COVID-19 or flu-like symptoms or have returned from overseas in the last 14 days, we ask that you delay your visit to our AA locations and instead call or email us.
The Ministry of Health has stated that the symptoms of COVID-19 are:
• A cough
• A high temperature (at least 38 degrees centigrade)
• A shortness of breath
For our mobile services; AA Roadservice, AA Battery Service, AA Home Response, AA Auto Glass, AA Vehicle Inspections and AA Driving School, we are asking additional screening questions to check and manage any potential risk factors.
We will continue to monitor Ministry of Health updates and we will be in touch with any changes to AA policy, otherwise business continues as usual and we look forward to continuing to serve our Members and customers.
Kind regards,
Brian Gibbons - Chief Executive Officer

Kia ora,
The safety and wellbeing of our customers, team members, suppliers and New Zealanders is always our utmost priority. We want to let you know what we are doing in response to Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Good quality, safe food is essential to all of our health, and having access to food and groceries is also really important for our peace of mind.
Keeping food and other essentials in stock
We're very lucky in New Zealand to have some of the best food in the world, and there is plenty to go around. There's no need to stock up.
We're working closely with our suppliers to keep food moving quickly through the network and make more deliveries to our stores. If you're seeing empty shelves or some products missing, it's because the product is on its way. It doesn't mean that we're going to run out.
We'd encourage all our customers to shop as you normally would, and to be thoughtful of others to ensure that all Kiwis have access to the food and products they need.
Good hygiene and safe food
We have always had very thorough cleaning, hygiene and food safety processes in our supermarkets and right through our supply chain.
To make sure we're doing as much as we can, we've also put in place even more cleaning and sanitising for each of our sites, and are installing hand sanitiser and wipes for our customers to use across our network of stores.
We're also following the Ministry of Health's guidelines around hand-washing and cleaning, and have reinforced this with all our teams.
Supporting our team
As a business which comes into contact with millions of Kiwis every day, we have a responsibility to help keep people safe. Right across our business we're following the government's requirements around self-isolation for any of our team members who are returning to New Zealand from overseas travel, as well as any of our supplier partners who are coming into our stores. We are supporting our team with leave if they have been impacted by self-isolation requirements.
Our online team is here to help
Our online service is experiencing high demand, and our personal shoppers and drivers are working very hard to provide a great service. If you're a first time online shopping customer, welcome!
If you're self-isolating, or you'd just be more comfortable with us dropping your groceries off at the doorstep without any contact, please let us know in your Delivery Instructions in the online checkout. We will leave your groceries on the doorstep and send you a text to let you know they're there.
Our teams are doing all we can to serve you during these busy and challenging times. We thank you for your continued patience and support.

We’re sending you this email to assure you that PAK’nSAVE has a strong plan in place around COVID-19 which includes keeping our people and customers safe – our focus is very much on ensuring New Zealanders have the essential products they require and we are working with our suppliers to make this happen every day.
At store and throughout the supply chain, staff are across all health and safety protocols as advised by health authorities to keep themselves and customers safe. This includes cleaning and disinfecting measures which are in place across all stores and are aligned with food safety practices.
We’re working with our stores and cleaning service providers to provide additional sanitising facilities for customers which include wipes for cleaning trolley handles and hand sanitiser dispensing units which will be placed strategically around stores. Many stores already have these units in place and our service provider is actively working with remaining stores to get the facilities in place.
We would like to stress that none of these measures are being used to replace good hand washing techniques and personal care as advised by the Ministry of Health – the health measures outlined by the Ministry are the best way for the public to protect themselves. These measures can be found here.
We remind you to please shop as you normally would. Our online shopping services are under increasing demand and we are doing everything we can to meet your grocery needs. Whilst in store you may see some limits on lines of products – this is to ensure that there is enough for everyone.
We’re grateful for your cooperation and will keep you informed if the situation changes. We recognise that these are unsettling times, and we want you to know that the safety of our customers and staff are our priority.
As you can appreciate we are currently receiving unprecedented high volumes of calls and emails from our customers so we ask that you please refrain from contacting us unless it’s urgent – thanks for your patience and understanding.
Kind regards,
PAK'nSAVE

The range of travel restrictions are:
1. As of midnight Saturday, no cruise ships will be able to dock in New Zealand until June 30.
2. From midnight Sunday, everyone arriving in New Zealand from anywhere in the world will have to isolate themselves for 14 days - the restrictions apply to New Zealand citizens and residents as well as international visitors.
3. Anyone with coronavirus symptoms will not be allowed to travel to the Pacific Islands and those who have been to other overseas countries will have to wait 14 days before going to there.
4. The existing travel ban for China and Iran will continue
The new measures mean New Zealand will have the strongest border restrictions in the world, apart from Israel and some Pacific Islands, which have effectively closed their borders.
Currently, New Zealand's border is closed to international visitors who have travelled to China or Iran.
People arriving from Italy and South Korea, which have become coronavirus hot spots, must go into quarantine for 14
days.
