The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Auckland’s property market is being felt, data from realestate.co.nz reveals.

The number of Auckland homes for sale in August was down 7 percent from the same period last year with just 7399 listings.

This echoed national trends where the housing supply decreased by 13.2 percent to 17,974 listings.

The average asking price nationwide has increased by 9.1 percent to $824,702 over this period.

However Auckland was at odds with this trend, with a slight decrease in asking price by 0.8 percent to $982,155.

Realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor said the national housing shortage is not getting better and buyers have “less choice than ever”.

“New Zealand's fast-growing population coupled with an increase in the number of Kiwis returning home due to COVID-19 is likely increasing the demand for property,” she said.

"With many Kiwis unable or reluctant to relocate overseas right now, this too is likely putting a strain on the market.“

Are you concerned about the impact Covid-19 will have on the Auckland property market?

Hi neighbours,

Do you sometimes drive a few kms over the speed limit? Road police have scrapped their speed buffer on Kiwi roads in favour of a no tolerance approach.

All motorists edging over the limit at any time of the year can now expect to be pulled over and possibly fined, national road policing manager Acting Superintendent Gini Welch confirmed on Friday.

It brings an end to a long-standing convention that law enforcement would let minor speeding breaches slide.

“We don’t have a threshold,” Welch told Stuff, “we don’t have anything other than the speed limit.

Previously, besides zero tolerance long weekends, it was understood police could exercise discretion up to 10kmh over the speed limit.

Aucklanders are being encouraged to stay home and stay local as the region enters its last weekend at Alert Level 3.

The reminder comes on the back of two weekends that have seen large numbers of people out and about at skate parks, exercise stations, pump tracks, playgrounds and sports pitches across the region, all of which remain closed at Alert Level 3.

This week, council staff have replaced closure notices and tape at the playgrounds and skate parks where it has been removed by members of the public. Playgrounds, skate parks, exercise equipment and pump tracks are closed at Alert Level 3 to remove the risk of transmission from common surfaces.

New Mt Eden viewing platform offers ‘instagrammable’ views while protecting historic Māori site

A new boardwalk around the crater of Mt Eden wants to be Auckland’s most “instagrammable” spot, while protecting an 800 year-old Māori settlement.

The deck is perched on the northern knoll of the mountain, and offers panoramic views of the city and Waitematā Harbour.

Tūpuna Maunga Authority chair Paul Majurey said the boardwalk provides protection for the last remnants of a historic Māori site built around 1200AD,

“Maungawhau is a waahi tapu – a sacred place of immense historical, cultural and spiritual significance to the Mana Whenua iwi/hapū of Tāmaki Makaurau,” he said.

“It is also geologically important and is highly valued by the many communities that have a connection with this special place. Maungawhau is a taonga in every sense of the word.”

The boardwalk carefully winds through the tūāpapa (terraces) where the houses and gardens of the pā once sat, and the rua (pits) which were roofed for storing crops.

Visitors can now appreciate these features without causing damage.

Majurey said extensive planning for the project included a review of historic locations and World Heritage sites around the world, such as the boardwalks at Yosemite National Park in the United States and the trails around Stonehenge in England.

“With around 1.2 million people visiting Maungawhau every year, a better solution was needed to both protect the pā features and enhance the experience that visitors expect from one of the country’s most iconic Maunga,” he said.

Construction began in November 2019 and experienced some delays due to Covid-19 lockdowns.

Visitors are encouraged to place health and safety first, maintain a 2-metre physical distance from others on the Maunga and take advantage of the manual check-in feature on the NZ COVID Tracer app.

Hi neighbours!

New Zealanders from farms, factories and schools around the country are showcasing messages of support for Aucklanders trapped in lockdown.

The initiative is being driven by Kia Kaha Auckland, a group aiming to support communities and regions who continue to be disadvantaged by the impacts of Covid-19.

Group spokesperson Lee Astridge said it was a way to show Auckland the rest of the country was thinking of them and wishing them strength in adversity.

“We’re a bunch of rural people who believe that stepping up and showing we care for everyone in New Zealand ultimately gives the country the best chance to thrive,” he said.

Here’s a clip of some of the messages, let us know what you think in the comments!
