The Three Doors - (a.k.a. The Monty Hall problem)

Andrea from Eden Terrace

Zane, a contestant on a game show, has a big decision to make. There are three doors in front of him and behind each door is a prize. The prize behind one of the doors is a shiny red sports car while the prize behind each of the other two doors is a goat (yes, a goat). The game show host asks Zane to choose a door. Zane squirms nervously before finally announcing his choice.

"Zane, I am feeling generous" says the game show host, "I will open one of the two doors you didn't choose which I know to have a goat behind it." So he does, and now there are only two closed doors, the one Zane picked and one other. The host continues "I will give you a chance to change your mind and choose the other closed door instead. Or, if you prefer, you may keep your original door choice."

What should Zane do?

a) Keep his original door choice
b) Choose the other door
c) It makes no difference either way

Hi there,
I know this is a super anxious time for many families, especially regarding their children’s education and particularly success in NCEA.
I’m currently looking for tutoring work and would love to hear from you if you would like to talk about options for tutoring for your child!

A little bit about me:
I graduated from Baradene College last year and I am now at Melbourne University studying a BA majoring in Political Science working towards gaining entry in post-graduate Law. For anyone with children interested in Australian University entry I was accepted with a 99.75 ATAR. (If anyone is interested in Australian University admission please reach out as I know it can be a tricky process to navigate and I’d be happy to have a chat!)

I graduated high school as Proxime Accessit (Second Dux) and completed NCEA with nearly all excellences across the three years.
I was awarded scholarships to Auckland University, Victoria University of Wellington, and Otago University each ranging in value from $20,000 - $35,000.

I studied English, Economics, History, Geography, and Statistics so I am confidently able to tutor in these subjects.
I would also be open to tutoring scholarship subjects for students looking to sit scholarship exams this year. I was awarded an Economics and History scholarship in 2019 and was awarded an English scholarship in both 2018 and 2019, with the 2019 one being an ‘outstanding’ scholarship.

With the current lockdown situation I’d conduct tutoring sessions over zoom and would be happy to have work emailed to me to be looked over - we can really do whatever works best for your child and what they need help in!

I have experience tutoring a range of students, as I undertook paid tutoring last year for a pre-NCEA student and then voluntary tutoring for year 12 students at my school as I completed my final year. Each student improved their marks as the year progressed.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to send me a message or you can email me at bella.hosking@gmail.com

I hope everyone is staying safe during this crazy time!

Meanwhile, when you do your next shop, we’d love it if you could pick up a copy of the April issue which is on sale now (you can add a copy to your online shop too). Art is always a great medium for children to express emotions, especially during this difficult time and at the same time to say thanks to those doing the hard yards to keep us safe and well.

I am inviting children to say thank you to those providing essential services by producing art championing the work of our doctors, nurses, garbage collectors, supermarket and pharmacy workers and the many others in a way that is consistent and safe with the “stay home save lives” message.

The art is to be of anybody doing essential work, whether it be on the frontline in our hospitals, our caregivers at home, our emergency services or the cleaners, lab technicians, supermarket workers, truck drivers, port workers and farmers who are keeping us safe and well.

Please photograph your art and email to me at parmjeet.parmar@parliament.govt.nz.

Shortlisted art (ages 1 to 12) each week will be published on my website.

The competition is for the lockdown period.
