2pm Wed 28 Feb, the RBNZ will unveil its eagerly awaited OCR decision, marking the first such announcement since 29 Nov 2023. What can we anticipate?
The RBNZ has adopted a hawkish stance, signaling potential rate hikes amidst concerns over domestic inflation - a sentiment echoed by ANZ's Chief Economist, NZ's largest bank.
Contrastingly, the majority of economists have taken a dovish position, cautioning against rate increases. They underscore the impacts of the successive rate hikes (+4.25%) over the past 2.5yrs and the softening underlying GDP, despite robust migration figures.
Adding to the complexity, our Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, has characterized the nation's current state as "fragile."
Market sentiment have been oscillating. Wholesale market funding rates experienced a -1.16% decline from 4 Oct to 29 Dec 2023, (refer to 2yr swap rate graphic). However, since then, they have rebounded, increasing +0.57%. Concurrently, retail mortgage rates have seen some reduction but not to the same extent.
Market dynamics are influenced by a plethora of factors, including local and international data releases like employment figures, inflation rates, and GDP growth. Moreover, commentary from influential figures - sometimes referred to as "jawboning" - can significantly sway market sentiment.
Ultimately, the RBNZ holds the reins, but it's far from a predetermined outcome.

The Kaipātiki Local Board is very pleased to announce that the Kaipātiki Local Park Management Plan has been adopted!
Six years in the making and over 480 pages long, this is a reserve management plan that covers all parks across the Kaipātiki Local Board area.
The plan provides policies that apply to all of our reserves, as well as individual maps and management intentions for every reserve.
Thankyou to everyone who submitted on the draft plan and presented to the hearing panel. The document will be available online soon.

Some of the changes introduced in this plan:
* All of our parks are now held as reserves under the Reserves Act 1977, and have been correctly classified as to their current purpose.
* Little Shoal Bay Reserve: Boat maintenance and haulage yard activities have been discontinued.
* Le Roys Bush Reserve: The bush area to the east of the carpark has been moved from Little Shoal Bay Reserve to Le Roys Bush Reserve, meaning that all of the bush is now part of Le Roys. This simplifies the boundary and makes policies, dog rules, etc, consistent.
* The Eskdale network of parks, and the Witheford network of parks will each become single reserves. We will consult on English and Te Reo names for each of them in due course.
* Søren G Christensen Reserve: A Beach Haven park that was supposed to be named after early settler Søren Christensen in 1997, has now been fulfilled (www.nzherald.co.nz...).
* All land parcels have been examined and legal boundaries have been corrected.
* Some reserve names have been simplified (eg, removed "place", "street", etc).

Watch out rats of the North Shore! Your time is up, thanks to two industrious residents from Ryman Healthcare’s Bert Sutcliffe Village.

The Village Workshop dream team Norris and Dick have been busy rustling up rat traps for their local conservation group, Pest Free Kapātiki (PFK) who will distribute the traps in reserves in the Birkenhead area.

The duo have got the production down to a fine art, and are ready to start on the next batch after PFK’s Senior Restoration Advisor Fiona Smal recently dropped off another load of fence palings.

“We are incredibly grateful to Norris and Dick for making both the rat traps and the awesome wētā hotels,” she said.
