The Kaipatiki Local Board has approved an extension of the liquor ban at the Birkenhead Town Centre to 24-hours, 7 days a week.

OurAuckland article:
ourauckland.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz...

The decision follows concerns expressed by the Birkenhead Village town centre association, local businesses and landlords, the Police, the Birkenhead Residents Association, Birkenhead Primary School, Shanan Halbert- MP and many, many others who have contacted local board members detailing concerns and examples of alcohol-related antisocial behaviour and supporting an extension of the liquor ban.

In response, the Local Board has unanimously endorsed an extension of the liquor ban to 24/7 around the town centre and part of Birkenhead War Memorial Park, shown in blue on the map. This also includes an extension of the liquor ban area to include Kaimatara o Wai Manawa (lookout), Birkenhead Primary carpark, Nell Fisher Reserve, Enterprise St, Trader St, the top of Hinemoa St and the top of Colonial Rd.

The area shown in red retains a liquor ban from 10pm to 7am during daylight saving, and 7pm to 7am outside of daylight saving.

Note that the liquor ban does not apply to business liquor licences, or public events with temporary liquor licences.

Thankyou to the Birkenhead Village for submitting the request and to local board member Adrian Tyler for co-ordinating responses.
Thankyou also to Kae Condon and Jude Turner of Birkenhead Village, Sgt Dave Murden of the Police, and Liz Lees of Northcote & Birkenhead Tigers Rugby League for presenting to our local board meeting on the issue.

“I’ll only eat dinner 2-3 times a week so that the children have enough food. This is very stressful… a lot of crying and minimal sleep.”

Food insecurity is the everyday reality for 98.8% of the families Variety helps.

A runner will complete seven marathons in as many days to raise money for underprivileged children.

West Auckland man Harrison Sanders, 23, said he wanted to experience a struggle, and encourage others to make a change with him.

“There are tens upon thousands of kiwis children that are going without food and the basic essentials to get by over this time of joy,” he said.

“So this year, I wanted to help out those who are in need over this time of joy.”

The primary school teacher will complete the runs from December 13 to 19, starting from Hobsonville School and running around west Auckland.

“The route will be the same every day, and I would love people to join in for parts of it whether it be running, biking, scootering, or even driving alongside,” Sanders said.

He has partnered with Pak n Save Westgate, Breaker and Tuatara Baseball, and every $100 raised will supply a child with a $75 Pak n Save voucher, $25 towards school stationary and a free sports ball.

Sanders previously ran 45km a week in the space of a year to raise money for mental health, alzheimers and epilepsy charities.

“Nothing prepares you for this amount though. So I look forward to the mental game I will be faced with,” he said.

“The route will be the same every day, and I would love people to join in for parts of it whether it be running, biking, scootering, or even driving alongside.”

He has set up a Givealittle to receive donations.
