Our new Cost of Living Payment starts … View moreOur Government has worked hard to lift incomes and make life more affordable for Kiwi families. Now, as we move forward with our plan to grow a secure economy for all, we’re providing further cost of living support for people here in the New Lynn Electorate. Our new Cost of Living Payment starts from 1 August, and will support more than two million New Zealanders. You will likely be eligible if you earned $70,000 or less over the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022, and are aged 18 or older, but aren’t eligible for the Winter Energy Payment.
Inland Revenue is working with more than 600 community groups, sports bodies and other organisations – particularly groups for Māori and Pacific peoples - to spread awareness about who might be eligible for the payment and the need to provide bank account numbers. There are fact sheets in 6 languages and webinars in English and te reo Māori to help share information about the payment and what’s needed for people to receive it.
There’s nothing you need to do to apply for the payment, and the income threshold is based on your individual income, not household income. If you’re eligible, you will receive the payments directly from IRD. However, IRD does need your correct information, so please take a few minutes to make sure that everything is up to date.
People can update bank account details through myIR. They can also use the self-service number 0800 257 777 to add or change a bank account and other details. It is a 24/7 number and there is no wait time.

UpsideDowns opened the doors of its new headquarters to host a Kids’ Art Workshop on Saturday, July 23.
Sarah Paterson-Hamlin, CEO of the charity which provides speech and language therapy for children living with Down syndrome, said: “This is the first time we’ve been able to have a space of our own like this, and having original art from some of the kids we work with on the walls is something we will be able to treasure and enjoy."
"I’m so grateful to Dame Denise for approaching us and coming up with such a great concept. We would never have thought to do this otherwise!"
The artworks will be officially unveiled by L'Estrange-Corbet at the UpsideDowns Art Opening on the evening of 10 August.

Jesse Jensen, who paints under the name Ares Artifex, has painted murals across Auckland, including for Auckland Council, the Department of Conservation and the Ministry of Justice.

Jesse Jensen, who paints under the name Ares Artifex, has painted murals across Auckland, including for Auckland Council, the Department of Conservation and the Ministry of Justice.
The West Auckland resident said work like his helped to beautify ugly places, such as bare walls and construction sites.
However, this year Jensen has been battling “toys”, or graffiti artists who tag over someone else’s art with the intention of wrecking it. One of his pieces in Henderson has been tagged about 30 times.
Jensen said that while it was frustrating for him and his clients when his art was vandalised, he had empathy for the taggers and understood why they did it: to lash out at someone who had permission to paint legally.
Jensen believed Auckland Council could curb offensive tagging if it provided more space for graffiti artists to paint legally. The council said it trialled this in the past, however the graffiti had spread onto adjacent properties.

Jahden Nelson, 28, was left fighting for his life when a steel pole he was holding touched low-hanging overhead power lines in April.
He received a severe electric shock as he took the entire voltage of the power line, and suffered a heart attack on-site after the incident. He is still receiving care as an in-patient in Middlemore Hospital.
