Anne Hastie joined the Amitabha Hospice team as a volunteer nearly 6 years ago. After retiring she decided that she would spend some of her spare time volunteering when she saw the Amitabha Hospice advertisement needing volunteers to help people in their community.

Having completed the training course, attending weekly evening classes for 6 weeks, Anne now visits two Amitabha Hospice patients every week, spending a few hours chatting and helping them in many ways. She considers them both friends rather than her patients and says the ‘best aspect of volunteering is the friendship that is established - always people.’

Join our great team of volunteers today!

A series of accusatory hand-written notes have been delivered to residents of Harbourside Drive following Sunday’s vandalism of several trees.

Locals are feeling “absolutely disgusted” at the suggestion that they are behind the incident, which involved a vandal felling eight street pōhutukawa trees with a chainsaw.

Paul and Sue Wilson, who have lived on the road for over 10 years, arrived home on Monday from a trip to Waiheke Island to find a line of felled trees and a curt hand-written note in their letterbox.

Many animal rights groups are calling for racing to be banned following the death on Melbourne Cup day of high-profile runner Anthony Van Dyck.

SPCA NZ says it is saddened and disappointed to hear Anthony Van Dyck had to be euthanised yesterday after suffering a fractured fetlock during the running of the cup at Flemington.

The horse received immediate veterinary care but was unable to be saved due to the nature of its injury.

The animal was loaded into an ambulance at the track but was put down soon after.

The SPCA said this tragic accident highlights the risks faced by horses participating in these races.

Anthony Van Dyck reportedly became the seventh horse to die on or as a result of Melbourne Cup day since 2013.
