Engage is an evidence based approach that supports the development of children's self regulation skills through play - to support positive behaviour and learning outcomes at school, and contribute to positive life course outcomes through adolescence and into adulthood.
Engage focusses on three domains of self regulation: emotional (feeling), cognitive (thinking) and behavioural (doing). Engage also emphasises the use of language - to enhance the effectiveness of games for self regulation, and to support positive language development in early years.
Self regulation skills help us to control our emotions, thoughts and behaviours - our feeling, thinking and doing skills. Self regulation skills help us to: remember instructions, juggle two of more tasks at once, keep going with difficult or frustrating tasks, resist the temptation to do something that might not be good for us, wait for rewards, take turns, work well with others, recognise and manage our feelings, deal with difficult emotions (anger, fear, anxiety, frustration etc) and more.
Children use self regulation skills every day, whether it's sitting long enough to listen to a story, remembering a list of instructions and sticking to them, being able to take turns in the playground with other children, or recognising when they are frustrated and stopping themselves from hitting.
A child's behaviour is often a result of how their self regulation skills (feeling, thinking and doing skills) respond to the challenges they face in everyday situations (fear, surprise, frustration, excitement, confusion, anger, hunger, tiredness etc).
Self regulation is a skill, and skills can be improved with practice. People with strong self regulation skills make better decisions more often, and are able to function more effectively in a wider range of situations - leading to more positive outcomes across their lifespan.

We are on the search for a new Head Teacher at Uplands Kindergarten. Our current Head Teacher is retiring after nearly 20 years and we are searching for someone equally special to take over the reins in the New Year.
We are a small community-based centre of 43 children whose philosophy has its foundations born from our Christian values which are woven into our day and provides a model for the interactions and mutual respect for our tamariki, kaiako, whānau, and local community.
The role is highly people-focused with support for administration from the church team.
The successful candidate will:
Role model our Christian values within their everyday interactions
Be kind, authentic and respectful
Have strong leadership qualities, ability to build trust and connection within our community
Have experience in mentoring a team
Ability to communicate and listen in a variety of ways
Be highly organised and have an understanding of shared leadership
View learning as a journey
Understanding and experience of ERO, MOE requirements, ECE legislation, and the impact and use of policies and procedures.

We are taking enrolments for 2025 at Uplands Kindergarten. Come and visit us soon. We are in Somervell Church - also the new location for Remuera Library.
We welcome our alumni to Uplands tomorrow, Thursday at 3.30pm for an hour of play. Please bring a small plate of afternoon tea to share.
We are hoping for a fine afternoon so we can walk our graduands to Meadowbank School for a visit with one of the Uplands teachers. This is an important part of our culture at Uplands Kindergarten, to visit the school the children will soon be attending.
We have finally received our new foam pads. They enhance our outdoor area and the children's gross motor skills all at the same time! Come and see us anytime at Uplands Kindergarten to play and jump.
We welcome visitors anytime at Uplands Kindergarten. We currently have space available every day except Tuesday at our sessional and all day centre for 2 to 5 year olds.
