The Nor-west Community Patrol Trust is seeking more volunteers.

About 50 drivers cruise the streets of Kumeu, Taupaki, Riverhead, Waimauku, Muriwai, Woodhill and Huapai.

They help Kumeu police by observing the neighbourhood and acting as a visual deterrent to criminals.

The trust is looking to boost the ranks with "enthusiastic, community-minded people" prepared to volunteer once a month or more often.

Patrollers act as the eyes and ears for police because they can't be everywhere at once.

Police will give ongoing support and training to new recruits.

Volunteers can enquire at Kumeu Police station, phone Colin Strong on 0226748238 or (09) 4129171, or Jan Henderson on

0272817676 or (09) 4129818.

Police plea for restraint selling whipping cream chargers, which contain laughing gas

Kumeu police are appealing to store owners to be socially responsible after reports of cream whipping devices being sold to youngsters.

A concerned resident alerted officers after she saw a Kumeu dairy owner allegedly selling whipping cream chargers, which contained laughing gas, to school children.

The complainant, the mother of a teenager, was frustrated by the incident, police said.

"The complainant had no doubt that the children were buying the product for inhalation and not for making cakes,"
Kumeu community constable Dimitry Pantileev said.

The charger was displayed at the front of the store by the Eftpos machine, he said.

Selling laughing gas, also known as NOS, nitrous oxide and nangs, for therapeutic purposes is banned under the Medicines Act 1981, which requires a prescription for the sale.

Using a cream dispenser or ‘’cracker’’, a small cannister filled with NOS, known as a cream charger, is released into a balloon, which is then inhaled for a short-lived but intense euphoric-like feeling.

However, the sale of the product within the food industry is legal, with nitrous oxide being used for cream whipping devices.

Under the current law, retailers selling the product must ensure it is not being used for therapeutical purposes, the Ministry of Health states.

Pantileev said shop owners should be socially responsible when it came to selling the chargers to children and should not display them in a prominent place.

".. we can only charge them if we can prove in court without reasonable doubt that the product they're selling is used for inhalation, " Pantileev said.

"It's possible but it's very difficult to prove that the person at the counter or the store owner had the knowledge that it was going to be inhaled."

Pantileev said perhaps it was time for a law change.

"On a broad spectrum, legislators need to look into that," he said.

"The desirable outcome is that the law change is implemented at least to forbid this product to be sold to minors and somehow to limit their display to the public."

A MOH spokeswoman in August said Medsafe had taken action in this area in the past and was currently investigating the issue.

“It is for the retailers to ensure they comply with the law and only supply products that could not be regarded as prescription medicines. Retailers should be aware of the potential for these products to be used for purposes that could constitute a therapeutic purpose. Having a means of ensuring customers had a legitimate purpose for purchasing the products would be wise.”

Are you in favour of whipping cream devices being sold to children?

Why or why not?

Melahomi Jandal Strutter raises $3000 to fight cancer

Cancer survivor Shane Callaghan has walked a harrowing 76.4 kilometres in jandals to raise funds for other cancer sufferers.

The self-described Melahomi Jandal Strutter said his feet were "pretty shot" after the trek but it was a small price to pay to help those suffering from cancer.

One pair of jandals melted into his feet and turned them black as he took on the annual Relay for Life fundraiser over two days.

"My right big toe blistered up badly to the point that I had to cut the side of it open to release the pressure," the 56-year-old said.

"I had a few blisters on my feet. But it's nothing compared to cancer so I don't care about it," he said.

The Te Atatu Peninsula resident raised nearly $3000 for the Cancer Society walking the Jack Lovelock track in Mt Roskill for nine hours and Albany's AUT Millenium Stadium for another gruelling nine hours.

During his weekend quest, he met a young athlete who had lost the lower part of her leg to cancer at 13 and was training for the Tokyo Paralympics next year.

She joined Callaghan for a few laps around the North Shore stadium.

"She was such an inspiration and I enjoyed talking to her," he said.

"I hope she gets to Tokyo and does well. "

Callaghan was diagnosed with critical stage four cancer in 2017 and was given 15 per cent or less of surviving.

"But I refused to give up, " he said.

"Now against the odds after my last scan I'm cancer free."

Callaghan said he thought good healthcare and a positive attitude had helped him to beat the disease.

"I do joke about cancer a lot, probably too much, but I do, " he said.

"For me, I can't feel down or anything because it affects my family.

"Even I might have been going through a couple of hard times but no-one ever knew because I just kept joking around."

Callaghan said he faces surgery on Tuesday to have his appendix and a hernia removed, possibly side effects of the disease.

The Melahomi Jandal Strutter said he was grateful to his wife, family and friends for their support during his cancer journey.
