This month we want to challenge Neighbourhood Supporters to come together and give generously from the heart this holiday season. With so much going on this time of year it’s easy to get caught up in the festivities and forget about others, especially those having a difficult time.

Whether it’s an elderly neighbour who lives alone to a family on your street working hard to make ends meet, reach out to someone who could use a little extra joy in their life and remind them what the holiday spirit is all about!

Other ideas include fundraising for a local charity, doing a food or toy drive, organising a ‘Secret Santa’ gift exchange on your street, giving a present to a neighbour who helped to make your 2020 better, or even host a community Christmas lunch.

Let us know how you’re giving back in your community in December by emailing: info@neighbourhoodsupport.co.nz

The first kokako chicks of the season have been banded in the Waitakere Ranges as part of Forest and Bird's conservation project Ark in the Park.

Kokako were first reintroduced to the Ark in the Park in 2009.

The population has grown to about 50 birds after hours of painstaking pest control work by volunteers.

The nests of five pairs are being monitored and protected.

The Waitakere Ranges are closed to the public to foil the spread of Kauri Dieback disease.

Resulting strict measures in place for volunteer trappers has complicated trapping efforts, a Forest and Bird spokesperson said.

One of the five nests has already been attacked by rats with the eggs eaten.

Trapping or bait stations set by Forest and Bird volunteers are used to control predators in the park.

Six hundred traps and 4785 bait stations are set to protect native birds, lizards and insects from rats, stoats and possums.

Calling community minded citizens - the Kumeu police want you!

The Nor-west Community Patrol Trust is seeking more volunteers.

About 50 drivers cruise the streets of Kumeu, Taupaki, Riverhead, Waimauku, Muriwai, Woodhill and Huapai.

They help Kumeu police by observing the neighbourhood and acting as a visual deterrent to criminals.

The trust is looking to boost the ranks with "enthusiastic, community-minded people" prepared to volunteer once a month or more often.

Patrollers act as the eyes and ears for police because they can't be everywhere at once.

Police will give ongoing support and training to new recruits.

Volunteers can enquire at Kumeu Police station, phone Colin Strong on 0226748238 or (09) 4129171, or Jan Henderson on

0272817676 or (09) 4129818.
