Approaching later primary school years can be a time of mixed emotions for students and their parents. Independence is emerging in the form of homework and study time, interest in specific subject areas might be developing, and ideas about the world and how to make a positive impact are surfacing.

Auckland bakers are being called to roll up their sleeves to help vulnerable animals.

The SPCA is appealing for keen cooks to take part in its annual Cupcake Day fundraiser on November 2.

The event has raised nearly $3.2 million over the years, helping tens of thousands of animals that come through SPCA's doors each year in need of care, shelter and veterinary treatment.

Budding chefs are invited to whip up a batch of cupcakes before selling them at work, school and to family and friends.

Last year saw 1092 home bakers and 641 businesses get involved.

SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen said recent events had taken a big bite out of the charity but here was something tangible supporters could do to help.

Funds raised will be used to aid in rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing animals in need around the country.

Meet Christina Nuku who graduated with majors in Indigenous Studies and Policy. Through Awanuiārangi, Christina experienced a 3-month exchange programme at the University of Northern British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. She shares “the exchange connected me with the Nisga’a people, First Nations tribal systems, communities and hauora programmes. It informed my studies and opened my mind. It was a genuine privilege to connect with the tangata whenua there, and an opportunity I would never otherwise have had”

“The difference at Awanuiārangi is the whanaungatanga. Our kaiako cultivated a supportive and nurturing environment”. Study remotely with us in 2021!

Luna was found deep in the ditch late on Friday night after being stuck for at least a day.

It took 90 minutes for Fire and Emergency New Zealand and New Zealand Police officers to pull the female kitten to safety.

The animal was not micro-chipped and had not been reported missing.

People who find themselves jobless as a result of Covid-19 can flock to Auckland libraries for a helping hand.

They can get practical support with their CVs and cover letters, viewing job websites, discussing skill sets or free online training through Lynda.com

Library staff will also connect Aucklanders with skills development, education and training courses.

Auckland Council library staff are being up-skilled to provide employment and skills advice to their communities using the new Work Navigator service piloted by the Te Manawa community hub in Westgate.

The goal is to help people recover from job losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The libraries involved in phase 1 of the region wide Work Navigator rollout are Botany, Central City, Glen Eden, Glenfield, Helensville, Māngere East, Manukau, Mt Albert, Mt Roskill, and Ōtāhuhu.

Auckland mayor Phil Goff said the initiative provides extra support for people who may have lost work because of Covid-19.

"The pandemic and resulting recession has caused businesses to close and jobs to be lost in our region," he said.

"We want to do what we can to help Aucklanders find work or gain skills to improve their employment options, and through this programme our libraries staff are well placed to deliver those services."
