A new kauri monitoring programme has been launched in the Waitakere Ranges.

Auckland Council workers are surveying healthy trees as part of their study into kauri dieback disease.

They are investigating the impacts of the disease on individual trees and the wider kauri population.

Auckland Council kauri dieback team manager Lisa Tolich said new remote sensing technology had given the council a good estimate of how many kauri trees spanned the ranges.

The team had drawn a sample of trees to survey.

“We are giving 3500 kauri in the Waitākere Ranges a full health check and will continue monitoring these specific trees for years to come,” Tolich said.

“The trees have been randomly selected from the overall population so field teams don’t know going in whether they’ll be assessing healthy or diseased trees.

“This is important because it means we can build a picture of what’s happening across the entire population – not just the areas where we know the pathogen is already present.”

Data collected will identify risks to tree health associated with the locations, environment and other factors such as changing climate.

Survey findings will help the council assess how well precautionary measures are working and if any adjustments are needed.

Funding for the monitoring programme comes from the Natural Environment Targeted Rate at an expected cost of between $650,000 and $700,000.

This includes the design and delivery of the Waitākere Ranges Surveillance programme between 2020-2022.

Environment and Climate Change Committee chair Richard Hills said the investment was another step towards helping protect and preserve kauri forests.

“Kauri dieback disease is unfortunately not going away and the more we can find out about the disease, through robust processes like our surveillance and monitoring programmes, the better placed we are to protect our native taonga now and for generations to come.”

Wisdom Tooth

We have many patients coming to us with wisdom tooth pain which can be quite distressing.

At Lake Panorama Dental we have the latest OPG X Ray machine which is very useful to determine how close the tooth is located to the nerve and whether it requires surgical intervention.

Some insurance companies do cover the costs of impacted wisdom teeth extractions if performed by a specialist. You would be required to get a referral letter from the treating Dentist.

The wisdom teeth are the last to appear, right at the back of the mouth. They usually appear when you are between 17 and 25 years of age.

If there is not enough room, the wisdom tooth may try to come through, but will get stuck against the tooth in front of it. The wisdom tooth will be at an angle, and will be described by the dentist as 'impacted'.

If part of the wisdom tooth has appeared through the gum and part of it is still covered, the gum may become sore and perhaps swollen. This is called ‘pericoronitis'. Bacteria and bits of food can collect under the gum edge, and it will be difficult to clean the area properly.

The dental team will usually take x-rays to see the position of the root, and to decide whether there is room for the tooth to come through into a useful position.

A lot depends on the position and the shape of the roots. Your dentist will tell you how easy or difficult each tooth will be to remove after looking at the x-rays. Upper wisdom teeth are often easier to remove than lower ones, which are more likely to be impacted. Your dentist will say whether the tooth should be taken out at the dental practice, or whether you should be referred to a specialist oral surgeon at a hospital. Very occasionally there is a possibility of some numbness of the lip after the removal of a lower tooth.

Phone us on 09 2186000 or text 0211363444 for a free Initial consult with quote ( X Ray charges will apply)

How's your attention to detail?

My home is on the market. View the nearly complete floorplan below with the (almost) original floorplan at the bottom. Printing out the pdf attached will make it easier to spot the differences.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to count the number of differences in the two floorplans.

Note: Please count each difference every time it occurs (each time it occurs) even if the same difference is repeated somewhere else. e.g the same difference (change) in two places is counted as two differences not one.

Also see:

www.trademe.co.nz...

Looking at the pictures and video in the above link may help you spot the differences.

Please email me (Alan) the number of differences you find.

Please send your emails to alan99nz@gmail.com before the closing date (19 March).

Good Luck.

p.s. I asked the real estate salesperson to look at the original floorplan, photograph during an open home anywhere changes were required, and send the photos to the person creating the floorplan who had not seen the property.

The salesperson only sent one photo!

I really appreciate Tim's help getting the floorplan updated :)
