That shiny new item on sale for a bargain may be too good to be true, police say.
The warning comes after two people were arrested for allegedly attempting to sell stolen items.
The arrests follow investigations into mail and parcel thefts in Hobsonville and Greenhithe, West Auckland.
An 18-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man have been charged with burglary, theft of mail and fraud related matters.
A number of stolen items are appearing for sale on social media, a police spokesperson said.
Often these could be brand new items, which are stolen, listed for sale.
"In the past offenders have created fake profiles in order to sell stolen items, before blocking buyers shortly after," police said.
If buying online, you should:
*Check the social media profile of the seller. Is it a new profile or relatively blank? It could be a fake profile.
*Be cautious if the seller insists on meeting at a public place. This could mean the vendor is selling stolen items and doesn't want to be identified.
*Use a reputable online site to sell items.
*Go by the saying, "if it's too good to be true, it probably is."
If you are having parcels delivered, police recommend you require a signature for your delivery and arrange to have your parcel left in a place hidden from the road.
Recipients are encouraged to get their parcels delivered to a work address or if possible, to collect the goods from the courier's depot.
If you see suspicious activity, phone 111 immediately.
Phone 105 to report a burglary.

In a media release, the DHB said it would start with 1820 higher-risk staff members who are more at risk of contracting the virus through direct patient contact if community transmission was to occur.
North Shore Hospital emergency department nurse Tegan Mayo received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine this week.
"The whole process was painless and I encourage everyone to get vaccinated when the opportunity arises, Mayo said.
"It was exciting and I was glad to be part of history being made."
Vaccination clinics for healthcare workers have been set up at both North Shore Hospital and Waitākere Hospital.
DHB chief executive Dale Bramley said vaccinations beginning was an important milestone in protecting the community from Covid-19.
"An incredible amount of work has gone on to get these clinic up and running and the vaccination of our staff will provide yet another layer of protection for all those who use and visit our facilities."

The newly-launched Craftivist Companions are turning to needlework to find their political voice at Ponsonby's Unitarian Church in central Auckland.
Ten “introverted” activists are creating mini protest banners
– the square placards will form a temporary quilt that will be presented to Auckland Council on April 1 for the updated living wage announcement.
The banners will then be left as “respectful graffiti” on public spaces such as lamp posts.
Group founder and church member Kay Parish said the goal was to get people thinking from a different perspective.
A midwife driven by a strong dislike of injustice, she was inspired by a movement in England led by Sarah Corbett and the Craftivist Collective.
“Sarah talks about craftivism as being an ideal form of activism for introverts, people who don’t love getting out there shouting and challenging people in a confrontational way,” said Parish.
“Craftivism is a way of approaching people more gently and presenting a message in a more respectful and thoughtful way.”
Corbett’s group persuaded British retailer Marks & Spencer to pay its workers a living wage by giving every board member a personalised hand-embroidered handkerchief explaining why paying a living wage should fit with their values.
“The board members really took that message on board ...and it just shifted their perspective,” Parish said.
The Titirangi resident said paying people a fair wage helped them live their lives with dignity.
