John Tamihere set to announce Auckland mayoralty bid tomorrow

Brian from New Lynn

Former Labour Party Minister John Tamihere will tomorrow unveil one of Auckland’s worst kept secrets – he’s putting his hand up be the
city’s next Mayor. The Waiparereira Trust chief executive, who is no stranger to controversy, hinted at the bid last year. He’s been in a bitter war with Auckland Council’s development agency, Panuku, over a housing development in South Auckland. He wants restrictions on the level of state housing in developments lifted. It’s understood councillor Christine Fletcher - and former mayor - will be his running mate. Current Mayor Phil Goff has yet to decide whether he’ll stand again, but is seriously considering it. He’ll make an announcement in February.
