There is an … View moreI have been reflecting lately, all these five years since leaving the public service sector, and the ongoing challenges that many individuals face with their mental health, particularly those who are striving to regain stability after resigning from high-pressure public service roles. There is an increasing need for supportive and nurturing friendships in these circumstances.
It is widely recognised that work-related stress impacts one in five New Zealand workers, as reported by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. The public sector is one area where this statistic is particularly evident. In 2023, there were 63,117 full-time equivalent public servants working across a wide range of occupations, with nearly half based in the Wellington region.
Presently, public servants within various government departments are grappling with significant stress and mental health challenges as the National Government’s cost-saving measures take full effect. Henceforth, having worked in the public sector personally, I have encountered criticism and disrespect directed at the government as a whole. In my experience, this negativity introduces undue stress and undermines the working environment.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, government departments faced heightened strain and financial difficulties, resulting in the departure of numerous highly skilled public servants. In some instances, individuals were compelled to seek legal assistance in order to exit their workplaces due to misunderstandings and the burden of resolving them, and are highly affected by the hurts caused.
Thus, the lingering stigma surrounding public servants, often perceived as being selfish or self-centred, has continued to impact mental well-being, even after the pandemic, negatively. In today’s society, there is a heavy reluctance to consider issues from diverse perspectives, and in particular from individuals of the older generation of the opposite gender where there is a majority of them in our current workplaces, etc., which exacerbates stress, misunderstandings, and may trigger traumatic flashbacks for some and suicide. Consequently, many individuals have sought to see a counsellor to manage these challenges, and the journey toward healing remains ongoing for those navigating the current economic crisis and still seeing a counsellor.
In light of these realities, valuing and appreciating our friends and loved ones is vital, acknowledging that life is short. Most importantly, when our friends express genuine care by confronting us with the truth, it is imperative to seek clarification rather than misconstrue their intentions.
Furthermore, extending empathy and support to those enduring similar struggles is essential, fostering conversations marked by love, grace, and a commitment to understanding diverse perspectives.
As we encounter these challenges, it is vital to turn to our faith for strength and guidance. Scriptural passages such as Matthew 11:28–30 encourage us to surrender our burdens to the Lord and find rest in Him. Other passages, including Jeremiah 4:11–28, 3:22, Isaiah 40:12–31, and Ezekiel 37:1–14, inspire us to focus on the Lord and pursue heartfelt repentance.
Therefore, let us continue to support one another and cultivate a community characterised by love and understanding. Nevertheless, prioritising time with friends and family, fostering respectful and open relationships, and ensuring that others feel valued are essential to maintaining strong connections.
Overall, I would strongly like to emphasise by challenging all the older generation (i.e. Baby Boomers, etc.) of our society, to take proactive steps towards bridging the inter-generational and generational gap issues of concern by valuing and mentoring our fresh blood, our younger generation (i.e. Millennials, etc.), rather than imposing control within both professional and personal environments. Nevertheless, encouraging mutual respect and understanding by looking through the lens of others’ perspectives will contribute to fostering a positive atmosphere at all times within both professional and personal contexts, creating a balanced and diverse inter-generational space.
Moreover, we ought to stop selfishness, self-centredness, disrespectfulness, and paper-chasing attitudes and commit to consistently demonstrating respect and looking at the other perspective of the lens and by allowing the other person to have the chance to explain themselves before making fast views or decisions whilst it is not true about that person, to everyone in today’s society. Let us build a community characterised by kotahitanga (unity and togetherness) and manaakitanga (hospitality and kindness), where individuals feel supported, respected, and valued, regardless of age, ethnicity, and background, and work by reducing the mental health and suicidal rates amongst all the younger generation of today’s society.
In conclusion, let's stop, think, and ponder our part as individuals and members of our community, and ask ourselves if we’re doing enough within our local community and wider society. Are we truly living out the Lord’s call by loving one another, looking out for each other, and nurturing meaningful friendships? Whether we’re spending time together often, going away, or staying local, we are called to keep our hearts and hands open, reaching out to those who may feel isolated. Moreover, in times of crisis, when someone feels unseen, despair can set in, and for some, even thoughts of suicide may arise. Thus, we ought to show real connection and care, fulfilling the real human touch of showing respect and understanding to everyone in today's society climate.

In the process an excess of 80 stolen items, including 13 electric scooters, have been recovered by Police.
Auckland Central Area Commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff says an investigation has been underway into a series of burglaries at businesses and apartments in the city over the past month.
On Wednesday morning, the City Tactical Crime Unit along with the Beat Team and Police Support Unit executed two search warrants.
“Operation Rocket homed in on two apartments within a Hobson Street complex,” Inspector Tetzlaff says.
“Inside our teams came across an Aladdin’s cave of stolen property and it’s going to take some time to work through where everything has come from.”
Amongst the find was 13 electric scooters, an assortment of power tools and other electronic valuables.
Some of the power tools have been linked to a North Shore burglary in 2019, Inspector Tetzlaff says.
Four people at the addresses have been arrested and charged.
“Charges laid at this point relate to two burglaries at a Wellesley Street business, and a Union Street apartment last month,” he says.
Those charged are two men, aged 28 and 36, and two women, aged 35 and 41.
A 28-year-old man has been charged with two counts of burglary. He has also been charged with the aggravated robbery of an electric scooter in January.
A 41-year-old woman faces two charges of burglary. The other two arrested face charges of receiving stolen property.
Separately, a 47-year-old woman was located during search warrants in possession of methamphetamine and charged accordingly.
“The team working on Operation Rocket are continuing with their enquiries and further charges cannot be ruled out at this stage,” Inspector Tetzlaff says.
“Burglary is a serious offence and brings with it a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.
“It’s a fantastic outcome as our team continue to work hard in holding this offending to account.”
Those charged are now before the Auckland District Court.
