The slow-boiled one doesn’t notice until the temperature reaches lethal levels. 2023 will be the hottest year on record. That record was previously set seven years ago, in 2016. As King Charles said at Cop28, we are becoming immune to what the records are telling us.
The impacts of the heat are mounting. Warmer seas and a warmer atmosphere contributed to events that brought death and destruction at an alarming rate. In Libya, more than 10,000 people died when a flood swept a city into the sea. Fires burned through Greek islands and Canadian forests. Tropical Cyclone Freddy battered communities in east Africa already pummelled by poverty. Drought and heat made some regions uninhabitable.
The good news is, the answers already exist. In the past year, the UK produced more green energy than ever before. AI forecasts began doing work a million human forecasters couldn’t manage, analysing weather and climate data at an unprecedented rate. The Nasa Swot satellite started measuring where all the water is on Earth, helping to prevent future disasters.
Humans think they are smarter than frogs, but we’ll only save ourselves if we realise that we are the frogs, the source of the heat, and the experimenting psychopaths. Hannah Cloke

In the past two nights, patrols have picked up suspicious vehicles travelling into the Helensville township.
Waitematā North Relieving Area Commander, Senior Sergeant Roger Small says there have been increases in reports of dishonesty offences and vehicle crime in some rural communities. He says “We have seen reports in recent weeks across the Helensville, Kumeū and Huapai areas involving stolen vehicles or property being stolen from vehicles,”
“We’re actively following up these reports and as part of this response we have patrolling in place around the times when this offending is happening.”
Just before 2am, one of the patrols observed a vehicle with numerous occupants travelling toward Helensville on State Highway 16.
“The vehicle was signalled to stop, but on seeing the red and blue lights accelerated away at a very high speed,” Senior Sergeant Small says. “Another unit was able to successfully deploy spikes after the vehicle entered the Helensville township, and the vehicle came to a stop.”
All occupants, including the 17-year-old-driver, were taken into custody without further incident.
“We’re reminding the community that we are out there patrolling, and if you are ever signalled to stop by Police you should always stop, otherwise you are committing an offence.”
This follows another incident at around 2.18am on 8 January, where a vehicle was seen by a patrol being driven at speed through roadworks near Helensville.
“Due to the driver’s excessive speed, the vehicle was not pursued but it was later seen travelling through the township toward Wainui,” Senior Sergeant Small says. “Follow up enquiries are being made with the vehicle’s registered owner as to who was driving the vehicle at the time.”
Today’s reminder follows a challenge issued by Police in the lead up to the New Year for locals to make their vehicles less attractive.
“We’re asking the locals to keep it up, making sure their vehicle is secured and all their valuables are taken out when it’s not in use,” Senior Sergeant Small says. “Police are still actively following up these reports and we ask that the community remains aware of the issue. “Keep an eye out for suspicious activity in your area, and if you see something untoward let us know as soon as possible.”

Are you already thinking about the next break from work? Also, me too!
If you love a long weekend, 2024 presents a couple of opportunities for a four-day break, as well as some longer stretches away from work that use minimal leave.
Here's how the public holidays fall this year so you can start planning that time away.
Taking advantage of regional days
A few of the regional anniversary days lend themselves to especially long breaks with fewer days of annual leave.
People living at the top of the country and those in Nelson can once again enjoy an extended holiday given their regional holidays' close proximity to Waitangi Day (February 6).
Both Auckland Anniversary Day and Nelson Anniversary Day fall on Monday, January 29 in 2024, with Waitangi Day falling a little over a week later.
This means people in those areas can potentially get 11 days away from work (including the weekends) using just five days of leave.
Meanwhile, the people of Otago can also enjoy a longer break using fewer days of leave, with Easter falling close to the region's anniversary day in 2024.
Otago Anniversary Day is observed on Monday, March 25, with Easter beginning on Friday, March 29. This means people in the region can get 10 days off work (including the weekends) using just three days of annual leave, from March 26-28.
Waitangi Day
With Waitangi Day landing on a Tuesday in 2024, workers can take Monday, February 5 off and gift themselves an easy four-day weekend.
An Easter bonus for the south
Easter will be observed from Friday, March 29 to Monday, April 1 in 2024.
With Southland Anniversary Day falling on Tuesday, April 2, those in the far south will get an extra long Easter break this time around.
Anzac Day
Anzac Day (April 25) falls on a Thursday in 2024, offering up another opportunity for a cheeky four-day weekend if people take the Friday off work.
An extra long Labour Weekend in Hawke's Bay
Labour Day is Monday, October 28 this year.
With Hawke's Bay Anniversary Day on Friday, October 25, people in that region again get an extra long Labour Weekend.
Other dates for the calendar:
King's Birthday falls on Monday, June 3 in 2024.
Matariki falls on Friday, June 28 in 2024.
You may not be able to stretch these two public holidays out further but you can at least try and get the jump on some long weekend accommodation before it all books out.
