The Avis Budget Group Cure Kids 1000 hit the road on Red Nose Day with nine teams driving in convoy from Christchurch, through the North Canterbury back roads to Hanmer Springs, and back again to raise vital funds for a new app called Kakano.
Bruce Vincer, general manager, New Zealand Avis Budget Group, says his colleague, Rodney Swinney, wanted to organise a fun way to raise money for Cure Kids and came up with the idea of a charity car rally. He says "Mental health is a serious issue in our society, and it is important our young people are able to get the help and support they need."

Under the draft Education Amendment Bill, decile 1-7 state and state-integrated schools can opt to receive a payment of $150 per student, per year if they agree not to ask parents or caregivers for donations.
But as of last week, with just over a month to go until boards of trustees need to register, only 471 out of 1749 schools had told the Ministry of Education that they intend to sign up to the initiative.
In Canterbury, Shirley Boys' High School has rejected the discretionary grants, with headmaster John Laurenson saying its co-curriculum programme "would have to cease" if it took up the Government's offer.

The Hurunui District Council has agreed to lease a small section of the Queen Mary Historic Hospital Reserve to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa as a picnic area.
The plan is to use this space for a picnic area in coordination with the new attractions going in at the pools and the expected increase in visitors.
"We believe the new cascade pools and Conical Thrill ride will increase our patronage this summer and are very pleased that we will have additional land to accommodate everyone comfortably," Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa general manager Graeme Abbot says.
I took some people with disabilities to visit this place a couple of years ago when it was on Oxford Rd. Someone told me it is now in Sefton, somewhere, but I have been unable to find it. Does anybody have any info of its whereabouts please, as I would like to take them to it again

We have one petrol station in Pegasus, Waikuku, three in Amberley, then Waipara and so on in every small town along the way. It's a school bus stop here where the extra station is about to be built. What about the climate change strike, everyone screaming, that we should care about our environment, our cows are farting too much, but the big company are still do their business, sounds like an extra station is OK and the petrol is clean and green, right in the middle of town.
Community still grow, what about the bigger library , post office, extra bank, children's playground or swimming pool, or dedicated electric car rapid charging station that can serve at least 5 cars at once, we have three gas stations with multitude of pumps and only one electric car charger that capable of only one car per 30 min?
So it looks like our council does not care about local people, the sighing process went absolutely secretive, we did not know until the last day, no notice in the letter box, no announcement. Everything was predetermined, the big buck opens all the doors. So if you want to compete, simply buy out the competitor and open your business at old location. They closed one in central of Woodend and open one on outskirts of town, thus relocating it away from residential area. And not increasing the number of gas stations.
I am not against the business, but it is too many in one place.
