Understanding the 'Why' Behind Rates is Crucial
Recently, I ran a quick poll in a Ngaaruawaahia community group on Facebook, and asked a simple question - “Do you truly understand why the rates have increased?”
The results were telling. A full 88% of respondents said “No” while another 11% seemed to be unaware of rate increases altogether. I think this shows how disconnected many feel from the decision-making process. When residents don’t have clear, accessible information about why things cost more, trust erodes and apathy grows. And it looks like this is being reflected in our low voter turnout. Both are signs that people don’t feel their voices make a difference.
I believe the way forward then is for councillors to take the extra step to educate, explain, and engage - not only when decisions are made, but before they’re made as well. When people understand the why, they can take part in shaping the how, and possibly get more involved.

Whether it’s a courgette takeover or a feijoa frenzy, don’t let those garden gems go to waste!
Our suggestion to you: Did you know you can grate and freeze excess courgettes to use in chocolate cake later? It sounds a bit dodgy, but it makes the cake incredibly moist ... and hey, it counts as a serving of veg, right? 🍫

What do you think of the new Waikato racing centre proposed for Tamahere?
Early plans for a new 164ha base for the Waikato’s horse racing industry have been revealed, which will include space for harness racing, a retirement village, a small commercial precinct and a residential lifestyle block.
A community information day was held at the Tamahere Community Hall on Sunday where locals and other interested parties got to see early versions of the master plan for Waikato Thoroughbred Racing’s (WTR) new racing and events centre to the south of Hamilton.
