Bike park built by 12yo's to be flattened over safety concerns - Christchurch

Andrea from Eden Terrace

A group of enterprising 12-year-olds have spent 50 hours on Christchurch's Richmond Hill, shovelling and shifting dirt to make their dream bike park.
Niko Docking and his mates have been enjoying their piece of paradise, before and after school, and at the weekend.
"It's just felt really good to ride something you've built," Docking, a mountain biker, told Newshub.
However, the fun has come to an end.
Government department, Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), has determined the site on the hillside suburb as being too unsafe for children to play on. "Parents of the children say the risk is part of their everyday life in Christchurch."
Me and the other parents thought it was gold for kids in this day and age, with gaming, inactivity and obesity.
It's fantastic they wanted to be up here," says Erik Ellis, a parent from Sumner.
Although it was the bike park with arguably the best views in the country, LINZ has had the final say.

I will need to be extra vigilant when my children leave their computers and leave the front door of our apartment...what with all the traffic, lime scooters, falling commercial roofing, they are far better to stay inside!! Seriously though, what are we encouraging from our children?

Poll: Should the government levy industries that contribute to financial hardship?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

As reported in the Post, there’s a $30 million funding gap in financial mentoring. This has led to services closing and mentors stepping in unpaid just to keep helping people in need 🪙💰🪙

One proposed solution? Small levies on industries that profit from financial hardship — like banks, casinos, and similar companies.

So we want to hear what you think:
Should the government ask these industries to contribute?
