Endangered kokako birds will be backed by a music festival during Auckland Anniversary Weekend.

One dollar from every can of Native Hard Sparkling sold at Sounds Like Summer will be donated towards the care and protection of breeding pair Noel and Rehu.

The pair is part of a group of 30 kokako living on the bird sanctuary Tiritiri Matangi Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf.

Kokako populations in New Zealand have been decimated by introduced predators such as possums, stoats, cats and rats.

Only about 1600 of the birds are remaining today.

Noël and Rehu have successfully fledged ten chicks.

The funds raised will be used to monitor their breeding, help locate nests and record outcomes for the duo's offspring.

About 3000 people are expected to attend the concert at Omaha Flats in Matakana, Rodney.

Festival organiser Jade Atkinson said a number of companies wanted to partner for the event but Native was chosen because of its commitment to New Zealand wildlife.

“They have a point of difference which aligns with our core values as a festival; sustainability, environment, reducing, reusing and recycling," Atkinson said.
