Pike River's mine drift reopening is being labelled a "symbolic event" for families, with months of work still ahead to move beyond the concrete seal.
Victims' families attended a private event on Tuesday morning after efforts to re-enter the mine, where 29 workers were killed in an explosion in 2010, were postponed earlier this month over problems with gas monitoring equipment.
