Man arrested over theft of $11k necklace stolen in brazen robbery

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Dunedin News

By reporter Hamish McNeilly:

One of the men believed to be behind a daring daytime heist has been arrested by police.

Two men, who were captured on CCTV, made-off with an $11,000 necklace from Pascoes The Jewellers in Dunedin’s Golden Centre Mall on Monday, February 12.

A month later, police confirmed they have arrested a 30-year-old man in Mosgiel over the theft.

That wasn’t the only charge he faces, Sergeant Matthew Lee said.

The man tried to flee from police, but not before assaulting an officer.

He now faces charges of aggravated assault, resisting police and escaping custody, and was expected to appear in the Dunedin District Court this week.

Police also executed a search warrant to look for the stolen item.

As part of the theft, the two men entered the store and spoke to staff, negotiating a possible price for the gold necklace, described as a 9ct, 55cm heavy oval curb chain.

One of the men had previously been in the store asking questions about the same necklace since last year.

Poll: Have you ever been bullied?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

People associate bullying with children in schools, but it can actually stretch beyond childhood to workplaces or neighbourhoods.

This Friday is Pink Shirt Day, which began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new student was harassed for wearing pink. People across the globe are now encouraged to wear pink on this day to take a stand against bullying and promote inclusivity.

Have you or your whānau ever experienced bullying? Share your thoughts on Pink Shirt Day below.
