Construction begins at Waipu Skatepark and Activity Zone
Representatives from mana whenua, community groups, Waipu school, Whangarei District Council and contractors gathered on Tuesday morning to mark the beginning of construction of the new Skate Park at Waihoihoi River Park in Waipu.
The breaking of whenua at a sod-turning is a symbolic and ceremonial start to physical work on the site of the new park. The heavier work involving machinery and fencing will begin with Steve Bowling Contracting next week.
It is a significant moment to celebrate, following 20 years of requests and community collaboration working towards an activity zone in Waipu.
The Waipu Activity Zone community group, Council staff, skatepark designer Richard Smith of RICH Landscapes and park users put pen to paper during 2020 and 2021, to work out the details of what will be built. The Waipu Lions Club has been central to community-fundraising and grants over the years, facilitating a contribution of over $20,000 towards the skate park and expecting to have a further $25,000 contribution for Stage Two of the Activity Zone.
The eastern side of the park, closer to Waipu Centre, will remain a quiet space.
