When back pain strikes unexpectedly, it may be both annoying and confusing. What is causing your back discomfort if you haven't made any changes to your normal routine?

The solution might be in your mattress. There are several red flags to check for to determine whether your mattress is to fault. The first indicator is when you have a backache. If you have back discomfort when you first wake up, but you can stretch it away in 15-30 minutes, your mattress is doing more damage than good.

Also, if you find yourself waking up more frequently or tossing and turning in bed, this should be another red flag. Even if you do not suffer from back problems, you should change your mattress every eight to ten years for a healthier lifestyle and better sleep quality.

Whangarei District Council is delighted to announce the recipients of our 2022 Civic Honours Awards. Our District’s top honours for this year go to Felicity Christian, Brian Corney, Fred Tito and Steve Westgate, in recognition of their outstanding service to the community.

A Civic Honour Award is the highest honour we can bestow on a Whangārei resident. Each of these recipients has been nominated by people in their communities who have seen first-hand what they have achieved throughout their lifetime. Through tireless work, commitment and generosity of spirit, each of these nominees has made our District a better place.

Only four Civic Awards are given out each year. In a District with more than 96,000 people, receiving one of these awards is an outstanding achievement. Once again we congratulate Felicity, Brian, Fred and Steve and warmly thank them for their service to our District.

The 2022 recipients were announced at a special ceremony on 30 September with friends, family members, Mayor Sheryl Mai, councillors and local dignitaries in attendance.

At Ryman villages our focus is on experience-based care rather than processes, enabling residents to live in the moment and to feel kindness, love and security.

Most of all, Ryman residents living with dementia are supported to continue doing the things that bring them joy so they can live fulfilled lives.
