Child hit and killed by truck in Kensington

Caroline Williams Reporter from Whangārei Leader

Hi neighbours, a sad morning for those in Kensington. A child has died after being hit with a truck on Kamo Rd. Road closures have caused delays in the surrounding areas, including SH1 through Whangārei. A controlled pedestrian crossing is currently being built near the crash site.

NZTA funding cuts: is Whangārei unfairly targeted?

Denise Piper Reporter from Whangārei Leader

NZTA priorities mean four Whangārei projects will not go ahead, including two intersection improvements to help access to the under-construction Hundertwasser Art Centre. What do you think? (Please put NFP if your comments are not for publication)

My heart goes out to the parents, the family and friends of the child who got killed on Kamo road yesterday early morning.
What can we do to convince the Whangarei District Council to ban heavy trucks from our suburbs and from downtown and enforce the use of SH1 instead?
Every day and night heavy trucks are thundering up and down through Kamo village, down Kamo road. They know they should use the bypass, but they don't. We all know the companies, most trucks carry names.
Often they continue their path through Kensington and Regent past the Hatea river, though the inner city to Port road.
Along Kamo road alone we have several big and small schools, Primary and Intermediate as well as Early childhood centres.
How many more children have to die?
Other NZ towns make the use of bypasses compulsory for heavy traffic - why don't we? The town roads are not built for the weight of the heavy trucks anyway and require repairs constantly!
Any thoughts, my neighbours?
