There's some new traffic tech in town

So I decided to check it out, and there it was - a Schneider EVlink charger with a D-shaped type 2 (Mennekes) outlet. Fellow EV owners - please bring your own type 2 charging cable or adapter, just like for the one at The Warehouse. Many thanks to WDC, or Northpower, or whoever put that charger there (the Rock & Roll Club? ;-) - it's very much appreciated, and great to see that chargers are becoming a standard feature for new car parks.
And then I noticed, while walking around in the CBD (I know, I know... don't say it!) that the pedestrian traffic lights at the Rathbone St / Robert St intersection had been upgraded to modern LED ones, which are larger, brighter and easier to see (at least to me), and also include a display counting down the seconds left while it is still safe for pedestrians to cross the intersection. I think this is a great safety improvement, as long as we still have cars, cars, cars petroling and dieseling and blaring and thumping through the CBD, often in an aggressive and dangerous way around intersections and pedestrian crossings. So again, thank you for that, WDC.
It's those little improvements and changes for the better that seldom get any attention, news coverage or positive feedback. We love to complain about everything that's wrong under the sun but rarely appreciate the little things and steady progress and continuous improvements being made.

Do you want slower speeds in your community?

Denise Piper Reporter from Whangārei Leader

60% of residents want lower speed limits and just 20% were against them, according to submitters to Far North District Council's speed reviews. Whangarei District Council is going through a similar review. What do you think - should we have lower speeds on our roads?

Apocalypse now?

I got out of my chair and asked: what? Are you going for a helicopter ride, or is there one rabbit in the garden? Look at the sun she said. And after twisting my neck trying to get a glimpse from the living room window I went outside … and what I saw was a tiny red circle in the sky. No fear of 'don't look directly at the sun. Dark red.
I went for my afternoon swim and through the windows I could see the sky … clouds with swirls of yellow, ochre, pink, brown even. And the light was yellow. So yellow we only realized when we turned the inside light on in the shower and saw the contrast.
By now it's 6 pm. 2 and ¾ hours until the sun is due to set, and it's dark in the house. The light outside is an eery orange.

I read yesterday in the paper that according to the former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot on Israeli radio, it's all lies by 'the climate cult' conspirators. He who abolished subsidies for solar energy installations in Australia.

Well it just got here. It looks a bit like the apocalypse might be happening some time tonight – fortunately there's about 2000 km separating us from where it's actually happening. The entire sky (medium cloudy) has now turned a dark orange. Seriously dark. And it's still 2:20 hours to sunset.

Who needs to watch post apocalyptic movies, when all you need to do is look out of the window?
It's horrible. Terrifying, and pitiful when thinking about the people at 'ground zero'.
