Campaigners pushing for cleaning up the Town Basin and other waterways in the district collected more than 170 signatures at the inaugural event held on November 19 at the Canopy Bridge.
Two out of five water tests taken by the Northland Regional Council this year have recorded bacteria levels in the Hatea River considered unsafe for swimming.
Organisers of the event Together Tahi will be presenting a petition to the Whangarei District and Northland Regional Councils which asks the councils to make cleaning up and prevention of pollution in the waterways more of a priority.
Together Tahi plans to hold the event annually until 2025.

Sometimes we get caught up in the Christmas rush, and don’t take time to think about people who may be experiencing a much quieter holiday season. Contact with older people can help families to connect with what Christmas is really about, and it’s a great time to explore memories and think about traditions.
Age Concern New Zealand will posting 5 tips leading up to Christmas on how you can connect with your older neighbours this Holiday Season.
1. Invite your older neighbour to share a meal or a cup of tea
Christmas can be a tough time for older people, especially those who live alone. Invite your older neighbour over for a meal this holiday season. This will give you a chance to build a relationship with them.
Summer School Holiday Programme is out! Check what's on in your area by following the link below or see the centre page of this week's Leader.
Intersection upgrade to be finished by Christmas!
All four lanes along Western Hills Drive, from Russell Road to the new roundabout at Kensington Avenue, will be open and fully functioning by Christmas, but will be down to one lane at night over the next two weeks.
