Over the last 5 years our road crossing has been damaged by trucks using our driveway, and our neighbours across the road, as a turning area.
I have contacted the council as it is getting to the point where we need to repair it. I don't want to spend money on it, to have the following week trucks drive on it and start destroying it again.
I spoke to someone at the WDC, and was told that the trucks are not allowed to drive up on driveways or over the kerb. Also, even though road crossings are on council land, the landowner using it is responsible for maintenance. This I already knew.
I only started driving again about 6 months ago. I knew the crossing was damaged but not how badly. Water is now starting to undermine it even more, and the trucks still nudge the edge with their tyres as they try to turn, causing it to break more.
If you break it you pay for it. Council won't even consider repairing the damage their contractors have done, the buck was passed from Roading to Waste, who said "we will remind the drivers to not use driveways". Attached are two photos. First one is from Google Streetview from 2012. You can see the damage starting. Driveway has been there since 1984. It was in perfect condition when I moved here in 1995. In the last 5 years we have had 3 heavy rubbish trucks every week. It has been destroyed.

I have talked to someone about putting a steel plate across the entrance, but really why should I pay for something I didn't break?
Sorry for the long winded rant. Just wondering what would you do?
Would you pester the council?
Would you talk to your local councillor?
Would you just repair it, hoping the trucks stop using it?
Would you leave it?
Or would you put in a steel plate and still hope the trucks quit using your driveway?

UPDATE: 11/05/17. Have had a visit from council and Northwaste reps this week to look at damage. Lots of talk talk. Now waiting to see what happens.

I went to my course & left the wallet at home ( mummy's brain, my bad ) this morning. It could be alright I dont need to spend anything.I thought.
Half of the day went well. I got unexpected call fr my boy's school to tell me that he got hurt by jamming his fingers & unsettle, no signs of injury just bruise. I let them know that I were out of town, coulnd be back straight away. They said OK & gave him an other 10 munites.
I couldnt focus anymore after that at class but decided leaving anyway. At the carpark I rang them. They said he was Ok & got back to class happily. Whoop..it was good. I decided keep going , but planned stopping at Farmers on the way instead. Bugger, I had no wallet. I arranged to borrow fm my husband who works in town & would meet him at Farmers. Ok that' was sorted.
I ve been through all the trouble to find car park. None left & so many cars go round and round. I moved to the building next to the Hospice & spotted one spot. Yeh. Parked the car. OH NO. Couldnt purchase the ticket , no money. I didnt realise it now. I were exhausted.
What would I do? couldnt leave the car but just go home. He was waiting & needed to get back to work. Is anyone kind enough to give away 50c-1$. It took me awhile to be brave for asking. The only chance that I still could made. You never know until you try. What would you think?
A old couple approached me, walking forward to the ticket machine. I smiled but really hesitated. The man asked "Were you OK" I replied I were fine,thank you but very shied I asked quietly. Did you have any coins? The lady kept walking & answered "Yes I had, but for me sorry". she walked away !!!.
Oh men. I felt so embarrassed, pity....not much differrent as if I were a begger. Did I just do something really bad? which I wouldnt have should. Why would she / he just bare one second, stopped & talked to me? The way she did just so cold, looklike it was none of her business, stay away from them. I felt that way anyways.
We all human being, making mistake...I did. This case was all my fault because forget wallet. Week ago I felt greatful because I found my wallet from the supermarket. Today, I felt opposite...
Not sure what would you do if you were in my position or you were in the lady position? I just wish we should be sensitive & nice to people as much as we could. Sometimes I left carpack, if my ticket still had valid time, I passed to next driver. They said oh, thank you...I feel please for that.

How does it work?
Red Cross Journey is all about walking in someone else’s shoes. Choose a journey to follow, clock 10,000 steps each day between 8 May and 8 June and get people to sponsor you.
Along the way, you’ll receive updates marking your milestones and sharing more about your chosen journey.
By taking part and fundraising, you’ll be helping Red Cross do good things across New Zealand and around the world.
Which journey will you take?
Choose to walk Disaster Welfare and Support Team volunteer Kath’s journey and cover 240km during the month – that’s about 10,000 steps a day – or get a team together and follow the Tamim family's route to a safer life, covering 1,000km.

No traffic will be able to exit Porowinin Ave on to Maunu Rd during the works, however traffic on Maunu Rd will be able to enter Porowini Ave as per normal. Porowinin Ave West will be accessible to light commercial vehicles and cars from the Tarewa Rd end only, they will need to exit again via the entry point e.g. Tarewa/Porowini intersection. Note: the route will not suit large truck and trailer units as there will be insufficient turning room to get them back out.
The work needs to be done before more damage occurs and a spill results, the contractor has made resources available and we wish to take advantage of the favourable weather over the next week. Sorry for the inconvenience and we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
