The rain has caused significant slips and flooding, with some people needing help from emergency services to evacuate their homes, with Fire and Emergency NZ responding to more than 200 weather-related overnight.
The NZTA has advised of a number of state highway closures and Civil Defence Northland has strongly recommended residents avoid unessential travel.
Whangārei residents have been asked to conserve water for drinking and emergency use only due to a burst water main, while treatment plants are struggling to cope with the "intense" rainfall.
If you've been slammed by the weather and would like to share your story and some photos, please email me at caroline.williams@stuff.co.nz or comment blow.
Stay safe out there.

I'd never want to cause one unnecessary pain or suffering, which is why we've chosen to manage pests in our home with traps. It's not ideal, but it's better - and safer - than poison. I've done a little research on humane, effective vermin control during the wet months, when they like to come in from the cold. Take a look:

Whether 2020 is what you imagined or not, we've decided to retire these hand-prints as part of the new Town Basin Playground upgrade. If you or your family are featured here and you would like to keep your square of cement for the inhabitants of Earth to admire in the year 3000 (👽? 🐛?) please get in touch with our contact-centre before Wednesday 22 July and we can arrange collection.

We make our steamed dumplings by hand using our own recipe for the dumplings. Our homemade chili garlic oil on top adds another layer of flavour in the dish so highly recommended!
Give our pork steamed dumplings a try and taste the yumminess😉.

I'm working on a travel story for Stuff about the things that have surprised returning Kiwis about New Zealand. If you have recently returned from overseas or know someone who has, it would be great to hear about the things that have stood out for you, for better or for worse. Whether it's to do with the weather, the cost of things, the public transport, the food, the housing, the people or something else entirely, we'd be keen to hear about it. Please remember that your comment may be included in the article, unless you say you don't want it to be. Thank you.

"My neighbour Ann, a retired special ed teacher, goes the extra mile for her community. On her neighbourhood walks she notices blocked drains, or dangerous pavements on school routes and spends time phoning the Council to get them fixed. She is part of a local group that petitioned for new school crossings on Takanini School Road. She volunteers at the local school for free maths tuition. She sets a really great example of looking out for her community and makes the world a better place."
