Social climbers - the comedy - is touring NZ!

Roger Halls Sparkling Comedy Social Climbers

What do you call six women stranded on a mountain in the rain: ridiculous! Or you could call them social climbers … but just not to their faces! Once at the hut, not only do they unload their packs full of food, wine, and a souvenir rock; their hang-ups get unloaded as well.

What do you call six women stranded on a mountain in the rain: ridiculous! Or you could call them social climbers … but just not to their faces! Once at the hut, not only do they unload their packs full of food, wine, and a souvenir rock; their hang-ups get unloaded as well.

Torrential rain and a flooded bridge keep them stranded for three days. What they get up to, to help pass the time, raises a few eyebrows and will have you laughing, tearing up and applauding enthusiastically as they bare all.

Of course, it’s not just souls that are exposed, there’s a little nudity, a cracking thunderstorm, explosions, screaming bloody murder, ghostly stories, a birthday celebration, a séance, a drunken party, confessions, meltdowns and revelations that will keep you and your friends entertained throughout.

Perfectly timed for your own social group’s ascent into summer, don’t miss this hilarious play when it comes to a town near you in November.

A Whakatāne District Council and Tāneatua community pilot project will see 21 new fruit trees planted in Tāneatua this week, in the road reserves on Howell, Amokura and Morrison Roads.

Council staff have trialed the planting of fruiting trees in public parks in the town over the last two seasons, including in Jack Knowles Reserve, but this is the first time fruit trees will be planted as part of the public streetscape.

The 1.5-2 m tall trees have been generously donated by Pride Whakatāne (a local group aligned with Keep New Zealand Beautiful) and consist of a mix of pears, apples, plums and nashis.

It is hoped that the community will act as kaitiaki and will share their produce with whānau when the trees start producing fruit from late-summer.

Contractor Draintech will be carrying out thrusting work and pipe installation, which will require the southern (uphill) road shoulder, from the bottom of the hill to Brown Road, to be closed to traffic from 10 September. There will be no right turn available into Brown Road for up to four weeks while work is carried out in that area.

After the lower section is completed, pipe thrusting will be undertaken on the remainder of the hill, from Brown Road to the Otarawairere Road intersection, with the shoulder and one of the two uphill lanes closed as work progresses.

The existing 80 km/hr speed limit will continue to apply during the work period.

A portion of Mahy Reserve, south of the basketball court, will be fenced off and used as a contractor’s yard for the duration of the work, which is expected to be completed ahead of the Christmas season, weather permitting. The contractor’s yard will be used to store the pipes and project equipment, and to heat-weld the pipe sections together before they are installed.

Whakatāne District Council Manager Capital Projects, Jim Finlay, says the pipe renewal is necessary due to the age of the existing infrastructure. “We appreciate that there will be some inconvenience to the public, and particularly people living on Brown Road, and we apologise for that,” he says. “This type of renewal work is only required about every 70 years, so once it’s complete, it will be a considerable time before any similar disruption occurs.”

On completion of the pipe installation work, the section of Ōhope Road between the Brown Road and Cliff Road intersections will be resurfaced in hotmix. This road upgrade had been planned for 2017, but was held over due to the need to excavate and then reinstate access pits for the pipe installation.
