Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins on Tuesday gave Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield new powers, which means he can now easily require negative tests for arrivals from all countries.
It comes as Covid-19 surges around the world, in sharp contrast to New Zealand, where there is no current community transmission. Both the US and UK are experiencing unprecedented peaks in Covid-19 and nearly 2 million people have now died from the virus globally.

Earlier this month, one of the owners of the store was working behind the counter when a man entered the store and demanded money.
He walked behind the counter to the cash register and took a large sum of money, but the owner very quickly managed to activate the anti-theft smoke canon and the offender fled the shop.
Seeing what happened, the members of the public chased the offender and caught him, holding him until Police arrived soon afterwards.
He was then arrested and taken into custody.
A 40-year-old man has been charged with theft and was due to appear in the Waitakere District Court last week.
The money taken was returned to the dairy owners (pictured on the left), who were very grateful to those who stepped in to help.
A great result and example of people going above and beyond to look out for people in their local community.

We'd love to hear about the great places you've discovered over your summer holidays, whether it's somewhere local or on a trip away. Did you come across a particularly amazing beach, camping ground, town, walk or scenic spot? What made it so special? Any activities or places to eat and drink you can recommend in the area would also be much appreciated. As usual, please include 'NFP' (not for publication) in your comment if you don't want it included in a travel article.
Cheers.

And there’s a wheely fun event so you can get involved in the race too.
With roads closed off to traffic on Sunday, 17 January 2021, Cycle the Golden Mile is an opportunity for cyclists of all ages and abilities, and on all styles of bikes, to ride along Lambton Quay.
There is a fun Kid’s Criterium, a Celebrity Criterium featuring a who’s who of Wellington’s leading figures and two races for club riders.
Afterwards, line the Quay and soak up the festive atmosphere as New Zealand’s elite road cyclists race the fifth and final stage of the UCI 2.2 New Zealand Cycle Classic. This will be a thrilling Criterium held on the same city streets followed by the presentation of the coveted Yellow Jersey to the Tour winner and overall classification jerseys from the previous four days of racing in Wairarapa.

The little white kiwi with a feisty personality was more than just a bird to those who met her and the institutions who served as her guardians.
The extremely rare bird made the news across the world as the first white kiwi chick to be hatched in captivity back in 2011, and she died on December 27, 2020 after surgery to remove an infertile egg that had become stuck.

Perfect timing - first Fabric-a-Brac for 2021 and it's on Wellington Anniversary Weekend. Head to Greytown for gorgeous fabrics and more. Also on that weekend is The famous Greytown Sidewalk Sale with bargain stalls outside the stores all 3 days of the weekend. Neat.
