The National Emergency Management Agency has instructed residents leading up to the storms to:
- Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows;
- Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside;
- Get back to land, if outdoors on the water;
- Move cars under cover or away from trees;
- Secure any loose objects around your property;
- Check that drains and gutters are clear;
- Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.
Once the storm is over, caution is needed outside or when driving as there may be fallen trees and power lines. It is best to avoid streams and drains as there is chance of being swept away in flash flooding.
You can check the official warnings in place on the MetService website.
Those in Taranaki can keep up to date at the Taranaki Emergency Management website.

"I am a big lover of all things treats and cuddles, and will win you over the first chance I get! My brother and I haven't had the best life before arriving at the SPCA but have since had a bit of a makeover and are feeling better as each day passes. We love having the human companionship and comfort of home life but it doesn't compare to the real thing! Now is the time where we are ready to find a home who is committed to dog ownership and all it involves. I am not suited to a home with cats or smaller animals. I would prefer a home either with my brother Preston or by myself. If I do go home by myself, I'd want someone home part time or full time. I am not keen on places like dog parks or daycare. To be honest, the perfect day would be a nice walk then lazing at home! I'm more comfortable with adults or teenage children than little humans."

Our club was chartered in May 1982. This, our 40th anniversary year, is an opportunity to reflect on, and celebrate, the Club’s many activities and achievements over the years. Here is one such achievement:
1995 - 1997: Homewood garden parties.
The very popular garden party series came about as a result of discussions between the Club and then British High Commissioner, Robert Alston, and his wife, Pat. The first, in 1995, raised $7,000 for Mary Potter Hospice. The second, in the following year, raised money for various children’s charities, and the third, in 1997, raised $3,000 for the Save the Children Fund.
These garden parties were ‘traditional English’ in style, with cream tea, strawberries and cream, a brass band playing the hymn ‘Jerusalem’ and other appropriate tunes, games including coconut shies and skittles, and demonstrations of Morriss dancing.
Applications for membership are always welcome.
If you’d like to learn more about Rotary and the personal satisfaction and growth that comes from serving others, please contact Andrea Skews, E andrea.skews@gmail.com, M 022 073 5548 or Phil Oliver, E phil@praxissoftware.co.nz, M021 292 7001.
