The 2010-2012 Canterbury earthquakes, and more recently the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake, have demonstrated the importance of households being prepared to keep themselves safe and cared for during and after a major emergency event. When households can look after themselves, it helps emergency services and response agencies, which are often stretched beyond capacity, focus their limited resources on the people who need the most assistance. Prior preparation also helps people and communities respond and recover more quickly.
The Joint Centre for Disaster Research (Massey University and GNS Science) and the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) are carrying out a survey of households to investigate emergency preparedness levels in the Wellington region. We are interested in knowing about preparedness activities undertaken in households, sources of emergency preparedness information used in households, and the ways in which individuals and/or households get involved in community preparedness efforts.
The results of the survey will be used to help build emergency preparedness capacity in households in Wellington and throughout New Zealand. No participants will be identifiable, and results from the survey will be generalised across populations. The survey findings will be published in reports and/or academic outputs, and will be accessible to participants.
