This week we again feature Louise Thomas. What do you think the secret is to taking to good bird pictures?

"I've been teaching myself bird photography for a couple of years now. I usually try to zoom right in on the subject and move around so that I can get rid of any distracting twigs or leaves that might cover the subject or create unwanted shadows. Lately I've been thinking sometimes it's good to put a bit of habitat in, especially when it has such beautiful colours as this winter tree just starting to bud up. Kererū/ wood pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae), rocking those golden browns and forest greens."

Peepo - "A couple weeks ago we adopted Benjamin Button, now called Peepo. He has been a delight and a half, to say the least, and has grown so big in such a small amount of time! Slowly, he has adjusted to his new home and is now a superb older brother to his little sister, Namnam. The staff at the SPCA were super helpful throughout the entire adoption process, even giving us tips on how to introduce our new kittens. Suffice to say they are now best buddies."

We are lucky to have a free ambulance service and over the next few weeks it is likely to be under more pressure than normal. There are 500,000 people in the region and if 85,.000 text ONESIE to 3181 to donate $3, that would be an incredible $255,000, the cost of a new ambulance. You can also donate online at onesieday.co.nz

The Wellington City Council is reminding dog owners that although dohs make great companions during lockdown, dogs must be on a lead.
"Remember that during lockdown you can still walk your dog as long as they stay in your bubble, on a leash and within your area. This includes cemeteries, streets, parks and reserves. Please don’t let others pat your dog or let other dogs interact with them. Please do not drive to dog exercise areas, but walk there instead. Take extra care to wash and sanitise your hands before and after touching surfaces and taking your dog for a walk."

During Alert Level 4, guidance from the Government and Ministry of Health stipulates that the council can still provide essential services, but non-essential operations must cease for the safety of staff and the community. That means parks and pools are closed.

Mayor Andy Foster says it’s very frustrating to be back in this position, but as a city we all need to work together to protect our people, our economy, and our more vulnerable communities.

“For Wellington City Council, Alert Level 4 means our staff and contractors will be following safety protocols to keep themselves and our community safe. This includes limiting contact with the public and providing more services online or over the phone wherever we can.”

Rubbish will still be collected, but there will be changes to the recycling kerbside collections.
EnviroWaste will not be collecting glass recycling while we are in Level 4.

All recreation facilities, libraries, and other community venues are also closed. Check the council website for more information.
