Our Coordinator at Hastings District Council recently sent us this snap from a get together with residents from a new suburb who are keen to get Neighbourhood Support up and running.
To gauge interest, he hosted a free barbecue at a park with the support of their local New Zealand Police to bring neighbours together to discuss setting it up. Every group is different in how it chooses to operate. Our policy is whatever works best for your area!

We have considerable challenges to maintain our current network and be prepared for growth. Maintaining a balance between delivering affordable, clean and sufficient water must be balanced with ensuring our take does not adversely affect the eco-systems of the relevant waterways or result in environmentally harmful discharges.
Connect with us to talk about what we can do together. You can reach us at whaitua@gw.govt.nz. To see what we have been doing visit our Facebook page, and to share what you value about our water and your solutions have your say by following the link below.
All of our programmes have a focus on team-building, learning to work through challenges with others.

The only one of the 'panel' on stage that didn't come across as a total imbecile was the only lady - her first name was Brenda but I didn't catch her second. It was interesting to know that the question over the Newlands Volunteer Fire Station was first mooted in 1993, again in 2007 and of course again in 2019 when the WCC has decided it wants to build a toilet? Go figure! What the hell has been happening since 1993 and now? Brenda said 3 options were mooted - a) Close & dis-establish Newlands VFB, b) Build elsewhere in Newlands or c) the preferred option by the Fire Service - join with Johnsonville. By the way how the hell are they going to build an extension to the J/ville fire station to accommodate the Newlands Fire Engine? It reeks of total stupidity similar to Peter Gilberds idea that he was going to widen Batchelor Street to accommodate the extra cars parked there due to the intensive infill housing in Batchelor/Atkinson Streets! Brenda also asked what is the forecast growth in the Newlands area - the Fire Service could only come up with historical growth forecasts and what they learned from their 'models' - perhaps they should wake up and get with the current trends which indicate Newlands is growing faster than anyone imagined possible!

We want March to be all about celebrating the connections we have while making new ones along the way. As we all know, what makes a neighbourhood great isnโt the houses and cars, gardens and streets - itโs the people who share their presence and aroha with each other.
A wonderful way to take part is to participate in Neighbours Day Aotearoa which takes place from 27 March - 5 April. This yearโs theme is โSmall Things Make a Big Differenceโ - we couldnโt agree more!
Let us know how youโre celebrating by email or tag us online and include the following hashtag:
