There will be stop/go controls to make it safer for workers doing the road/kerbing work (as outlined from Fulton Hogan email below. Realistically, expect traffic delays and congestion to the end of February. Carl Savage, Secratry, GBRAI...

" Hi all, Just wanted to offer an update on our current works in the Brooklyn area: Harrison Street is on course to be completed by the end of this week, though there’s still a chance we may need a day next week to complete reinstatement of the footpaths.

Brooklyn Intersection work will continue from Thursday. The corners outside Two Todman and Salty Pidgeon have been completed, so we will now focus on the corner outside Unichem where we’ll be replacing kerb and channel and upgrading the pedestrian crossings, similar to our work on the previous two corners. We’ll then move across the road and do the same to the corner outside the former Wish Skin Spa building. We’ll hopefully need about 2 weeks for each corner.

This afternoon we have deployed some VMS boards that will advise motorists of probable delays. We will be implementing a 4-way stop/go operation around the intersection with some lane closure to keep our crew and the public safe. This will result in some car parks being removed though we’ll do our best to keep this to a minimum. We will also have to close whichever pedestrian crossing we are working on but will endeavour to have them accessible when possible. Please be aware this won’t always be possible for safety reasons.

I will also try and keep you better updated for the rest of the project than we have been able to up to now. Thanks for your patience over the last few months and hopefully we can be out of your way sooner rather than later.

Thanks, Michael “Chewy” Chew | Programme and Delivery Manager | Fulton Hogan Ltd

On the 12 February 1909, the SS Penguin sank in Cook Strait in a raging southerly storm with the loss of 72 lives, one of the worst maritime disasters in NZ history. Many of those who died were woman and children, as their lifeboats capsized in the wild sea.

Although the Captain was heavily criticised, it is still not clear what the ship hit nor where, as the wreck of the Penguin has never been located.

The tragedy stunned Wellington and a day of mourning was called for 16 February. The city came to a standstill as many of those who died were brought up to Karori Cemetery for burial in a long procession of cabs and lorries.

To commemorate this tragedy the Friends will be undertaking a guided tour of most of the Penguin graves on Sunday 12 February. This is our first attempt by the Friends to widen the knowledge of this tragedy.

The tour will commence at 2.00 at the Shelter which is located in the center of Karori Cemetery and will run for up to two hours starting with a short presentation. The tour covers some uneven ground and sustained uphill stints and so may not be suitable for everyone.

This is a free tour and bookings are required. Bookings can be made by following this link:
