The popular Motatapu cycling and running event between Wānaka and Queenstown is returning to local ownership.

More than 4000 people take part in the annual event, which has run for 17 years. It’s the one time each year privately-owned high country stations between Wānaka and Arrowtown are open to the public.

Ironman Oceania owned and operated the past three events. Earlier this year Ironman Oceania director Dave Beech said its viability was being reviewed in light of the impact Covid-19 was having on the events’ industry.

Queenstown-based Gemma Peskett and Craig Gallagher have since purchased the event and said it would return to a one-day multi-discipline event, to be held on March 6, 2021.

The event would include a mountain bike race, off-road marathon, ultra run and miners trail race.

Peskett has previously been involved with Kathmandu Coast to Coast and Winter Games NZ while Gallagher owns events company Summit Events.

They have both previously worked on the Motatapu.

Countdown to closure: Restaurant owner pleads for investor to keep doors open

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from Otago News

It's been a rough few years for Wanaka restaurateur Lucas Parkinson.

When he first opened his restaurant, Ode Conscious Dining, he had to work to convince the locals to give his organic set menus a try. Then the restaurant burnt down just as he was getting them, and the critics, on side.

When he first opened his restaurant, Ode Conscious Dining, he had to work to convince the locals to give his organic set menus a try. Then the restaurant burnt down just as he was getting them, and the critics, on side.

Then it wasn't long before coronavirus hit the headlines, countries began closing borders and the Prime Minister announced lockdown. Parkinson lost 70 per cent of his bookings, who were mostly international travellers, in quick order.

To save it now, Ode needs a “six-figure” investment. The restaurant will close November 8, and if there is no viable offer on the table by the end of the year, it will not reopen.

Employers are desperate to fill 8000 summer jobs in Otago – and they’re finding it nearly impossible to attract Kiwi applicants.

The horticulture, viticulture and tourism industries especially need staff, putting about $50 million worth of crops at risk if they remain unpicked and unharvested.

A recent “Jobbortunity” event in Queenstown attracted just 274 people. The majority were migrants, with about one third of them New Zealanders.

Neighbouring Central Otago orchards and vineyards need pickers urgently, particularly with the return of Recognised Seasonal Employer workers from overseas uncertain. Read more here.

Waitaki's incumbent, National MP Jacqui Dean has sealed a sixth term with 3168 majority win over her nearest challenger, Labour’s Liam Wairepo.

Dean trailed on at least two occasions during the counting but eventually pulled clear, winning with 17,615 votes to Wairepo’s 14,447.

The significance of the Labour swing is seen in the fact that Dean had retained her seat in 2017 with a massive 12,816 margin.

Dean said it had been a “watershed election”, with the tide turning away from the National Party.

However, she was “delighted” to be re-elected as an MP.

“I’ve been an MP since 2005 and I still pinch myself every day and I think how lucky I am.

“The party will have to take stock, but I am proud to be an MP and will continue to hold the Government to account.”
